Yesterday I went to Walmart. After placing my bags in the car I noticed a boy of maybe 9 or 10 sitting on a bench with a coffee can and cardboard sign. I don't know why but I walked over to read the sign better. The sign read "very rare sugar bear $250". I asked him where it was and he handed me the coffee can. My heart in my throat I opened the can. Inside was what I assume used to be an all white sugar glider and a rotten apple. Nothing else. She was bald in spots with crusty eyes and a very short tail. She was barely moving. I could have haggled over the price with the kid, but I just paid him and left. I took her. Out of the can and put her in my sports bra and rushed her to the vet to see if she could be saved. When I pulled her out of my shirt and handed her to the vet she was gasping for air. Suddenly she started convulsing. My vet gave her emergency fluids and some oral nutrients. She didn't make it long. While the vet was trying to resuscitate her two little balls of fur popped out of her pouch. The little boy was already gone but the little girl was tring to hold on. She made it two hours. I held her to the very end. I didn't have them very long but I will never forget how much they touched me. My girls will be getting extra loving for quite awhile. Glide free Angel, Jax and Peaches.

I just hope that in the end they all know how much they were loved. I hope they are together free from pain and neglect.

WAIT! I HAVE AN IDEA!!

Don't they have video cameras at Wal-Mart? Wouldn't there be a video recording of the boy and the parents, driving off in a car? Wouldn't there be a license tag on film? Couldn't we trace them back to their home and have them arrested?

He was there on his bike. It was next to him. Even if they checked the camera all they would see would be a boy riding up to the bench and a boy riding away from the bench. My vet reported the situation so hopefully there will be some justice.

That is a FANTASTIC idea - I mean..it's worth a shot. Surely the parents could be charged with allowing their child to be alone in front of a stupid Wal-Mart loitering and selling a sick animal. Grrrrrrr!

Someone is bound to recognize him.

And who knows? There may be other gliders in that house that need rescuing, other animals, maybe other children. There was a case like that very recently, wasn't there?

It might be too late for the one glider and her babies, but there may be others still waiting and needing help.

Jilly - if nothing else, you eased their passing. I think they must have known someone cared about them - and I think that does help them. It is so sad that it was too late - but I think that knowing someone cared enough to help them as they passed - I think that counts.

Wow... That's extremely sad, but way to go on being so proactive. Clearly they were past the point of really being helped, but it was so kind of you to do all you could.

I did go to the police station and report it. They aren't sure how much they can do as he is a minor, but they will check the tapes and ask some questions. We will see.

Thank you guys for all the support. I really appreciate it.

I think what gets me more than anything is how nonchalant the boy was. No emotion. No nothing. He could have been selling worms for all the concern he showed. I just don't get people like that. It makes me worry about what kind of home environment he must live in to be that way.

Yup! Well said! I am glad ppl like you exist.

I hope the police really do something about this. It's so easy for them to say, "Yeah, yeah, we'll look into it" and then go back to eating donuts.

We also don't know the whole story. For all we know, that kid took his mom's prized leu and stuck her in a can with little to no ventilation to sell for drug money. It may not be the parents' fault at all, but his and his alone.

I have an 11 year old and I know where he is every minute. His parents had to know. Though it is possible he was selling them for his parents. It's not that far fetched a concept. The whole situation makes me sick. Sick to my stomach and sick at heart.

Valkyriemome- your boys will never want for anything. They will never have to worry where their next meal is coming from or if they are Loved.

There's a lot of ugliness in the world so I can't rule it out just because he's a kid. Then again, to balance it all out, there's a lot of beauty in the world, too, like Jilly's act of kindness.

I got a phone call from the PD tonight. They tracked down the parents and arrested them for animal abuse and child endangerment. Child services has the boy and his 2 year old sister now. I'm glad someone has to answer for what those babies went through, but I can't help but wonder what will happen to the children now.

There must have been some pretty bad conditions for them to have taken the children that fast. My best friend is a foster parent and my ex-husband made a bunch of allegations against me while trying to get the upper hand during my divorce, so I know more about it than I'd like.

Maybe you saved those kids from something terrible.
