After years of owning gliders..this is a new one for me. My youngest had wet tail..you would think dehydration right? Wrong.from time to time how many out there grab a can of chicken or corn or veggies, just to save time...I do.i will never again.my boys have a bacterial infection from using canned food.i now own a hydration kit equip with a saline bag drip, and needles.my vet bill was close to $300..I am very knowledgable and comfortable injecting my kids if needed.all though the kit was my idea and not quite needed..I'm not taking any chances.and neither should anyone else...these babies are my life..are they not yours? Just be careful.

This is why even with canned good I will cook it to kill any bacteria that might still be left. I wouldn't feed my girls anything I would eat myself so everything gets washed and cooked.

No question is a stupid question!!!

So I have a question!!

Can food??? Please clarify??? Can food like the kind you need a can opener??? Or canned baby food that has the pull tab??? What type...of food? Just veggies??

I've never used canned anything just want to be sure I understand which kind since I'm always 'treating' my babies with new things and don't want to "think" something would be ok if it's not!!!

If you want to save time with veggies, frozen are safe. You can just pull them out of the freezer and run them under some cold water to thaw. Canned items contain preservatives and other additives like sodium, so they should NEVER be fed to gliders, even if cooked. I hope your little one feels better soon, best wishes to him.

This is the safest bet, I always try to avoid feeding anything that might contain extra additives. You do need to be careful with baby foods. The puree jars are generally ok for treats every now and then, or if your diet specifically calls for them (like BML), but anything else I would be cautious of. Things that are prepackaged for humans (ESPECIALLY children) often have extras added in for taste.

I use BML so that's why I got worried and needed more clarification.

Mine seem to prefer frozen veggies over fresh. i myself don't like canned, so i haven't even tried that. I have used canned chicken breast before, but won't do that again. It's always a learning process with our babies, I am sure there is plenty more for me to learn.

My vet just told me this yesterday...no canned foods! I didn't even know that. I had tried them on some no salt canned corn and they hated it. Glad they are smarter than I am!

Hi,
glad your little ones have recovered.
I am still confused?
I would have thought that food out of a freshly opened can or jar would have to be sterile or am i missing something???

Food in a can is not fresh!!! It has a lot of preservatives to help keep the food from spoiling. Jars I'm not sure about but I would think the same additives are inside to make the product last longer

I agree for Gliders AND people. Canned is no good. How do you think a canned food shelf life is so long?! So much stuff in there.

I thought tins of food are cooked at very high temperatures to kill all bacteria so preservatives are not needed, lots of tinned foods have nothing bad in them.

When I doubt read the label. I learned to read the label or buy organic food in jars but I try to always go fresh or frozen.

There is always some risk of bacteria with canned foods, keep in mind this is where we see botulism come from. The risk is small but greater to our gliders' sensitive systems than to ourselves. Bacteria or not, canned food is NOT safe to feed to gliders because of the preservatives used. Fresh or frozen, period.

I thought the recipe for "Glider Crack" called for canned chicken breast. If we aren't EVER supposed to use canned food, how can we make the treat for the gliders?

I was wondering the same thing. The recipe says to rinse the chicken well but I thought that was just to get the salt off. I suppose to be on the safe side we could just boil a chicken breast and dice it.
