Took Tinky Baby to the vet and it is sad to say in Malaysia, doctors think common lay people aren't smart or exposed enough to medical terms. Baby had a bit of diarrhea the morning we took her. I mentioned her soft stools and only then he checked her feaces and told us she has parasites in her poop. I asked him if it was for protozoa and he said yes. He did not even bother to let us know what meds he is subscribing her and told us these parasites would normally leave the system and said if we are only giving her filterd water, she could've had it when she came to us. I had to ask him what is the name of the med and what us the exact parasite she is having and only then did he update us. I find this quite irresponsible that the name of the med was not written on the med bottle.

It is illegal to dispense a medication without a label. Doesn't sound like a very good vet, maybe you can find a new one? I hope your baby gets better quickly.

I just read back and saw that you are in Malaysia. You probably don't have the options like we do in the US. Just make sure you keep on top of your vet and ask a lot of questions.

Guess what, read up about Giardia and called the doc again and told him that her symptoms are not as extreme as Giardia sounds and I asked him how will he know if it is Giardia by just looking thru a microscope and not doing a culture and he simply said that the parasite is a protozoa so he gave flagyl as it treats all sorts of protozoa bacteria.

Btw, here in Malaysia unless we go to a private specialist centre, names of meds are hardly ever written on the packet and I mean for humans. It is sad when we live in a country where human rights are not effective as I lived in Australia for about 4 months in 2006 and i still miss the country and quality of life. Here money has more value than human so can u believe the state that animals are in.

Yes, Malaysia has very different laws than we have here in the USA...Metronidizole/Flagyl IS the preferred treatment for Giardia and it is seen under a microscope. Make sure he dosed her/him correctly as our gliders are easily taken to liver toxicity with Flagyl. You can also contact it from them so anytime you handle or clean up after make sure to wassh your hands really well....

I also want to note that UV rays (sunlight) is effective to penetrate those eggs, so if you cant boil something wash it really well and then place it in direct sunlight for more than dry timing, making sure to move the item around to get all the nooks and crannies

Thanks Chris. We washed both their cages and poured boiling water over them and dried it out in the sun. I soak both their food container and water bottle in boiling water like I used to sterilise my kids feeding bottles and change her fleece blanket daily as i have many pieces. She is pouch protective so i have taken it out. I gave it to her yesterday though and took it out this morning. I bought dettol hand wash and started using it after handling her and I have always washed my hands before handling her from the beggining.

Yes, be very sure while you treat her you are cleaning that cage, water bottle and changing her pouch everyday. It would be best or easier if you took everything unnecessary out of the cage during treatment. Most toys. Clean her wheel very well as when she runs, she potties so the germ is all over that cage. Are you using a little bleach with your cleaning? I was told when I was dealing with parasites/protozoa to be sure and initially clean the cage outside with bleach and water, rinse very well and let it air ry in the sun so the sun could help kill the germs. Be sure to turn your cage every few hours. It is a pain to clean so much but it certainly is well worth it in the end when you get that clean fecal and a healthy baby. When you guys mention bleach, is it the one we use to wash white clothes. I use a lime based dish wash as i am scared the strong chemical smell in the bleach may give the babies additional health problems. Pls advice.
