Thinking of becoming Sugar Glider owners. We have a HUGE bird cage, suitable for medium to X-large birds. The spaces between the bars at 1 and 1/4 inch. I know the spacing for these little guys need to be 1/2 inch at most. Are there any recommendations on how to transform our beautiful cage into a suitable home for Sugar Gliders? Also, the bottom has the same bar spacing and below that is a pull out tray for easy cleaning. Is there a solution for that as well? I would really appreciate any tips, guidance, etc. (Lastly, do I need to be careful about the cage material/coating?)

Thanks Bunches,
K

You could buy hardware cloth at homedepot and zip tie it to the inside of the cage. I can't think of anything else but maybe someone else has done this and will have a suggestion for you.

While adding plastic mesh hardware cloth on all sides and the bottom of the cage will make it safe for your gliders, it will also make it a huge chore to clean. Every point where the mesh meets the cage bars is a spot that will accumulate glider pee and food waste where it will dry and be impossible to just wipe away.

You will need to attach the plastic mesh at numerous points all over the cage because the gliders might go between the bars and get stuck between the bars and the mesh unless it is very tight.

I suggest selling the cage to a large bird owner and purchasing a large glider safe cage in its place.

That's exactly what I was thinking, Candy. With 4 and soon to be 5 cages in my house right now, that's always my first thought- "How is this going to be to keep clean?" It is a very beautiful cage, but to make it glider safe may not be the most practical thing for you in the long run.

If you were to go with covering it with hardware cloth, I'd suggest doing so on the inside of the cage so your gliders can't get stuck between the bars and the cloth. Nice cage
