My heart is really broken a week ago I lost my mommy sugar glider, it looked like something happened in the corner of her eye as there was some bleeding and her nose on the one side was blue. I found her at the bottom of the cage and rushed her to the vet but she did not make it. Daddy and the 2 small ones one male 6 months and 1 female 2 months was okay but you could see they upset. The older baby male 6 months refused to sleep with daddy and the younger sister. I put a new nesting box and hang mat in the cage he went to sleep in the hang mat and daddy and the little one in the nesting box. We give them lots of attention and last night they seemed better. However this morning we got a shock, we heard some barking and got up to check on them. We found daddy hanging half out of the nesting box ice cold. When we took him out his eye looked like it was ripped out.
Can any please help?? Our hearts are broken and we cannot understand what is happening to our once so happy glider family?
M

Daddy was dead when we found him, both daddy and the young male neutered.

Daddy needs to see a vet NOW to treat the eye injury. He should be separated from the joeys until his wound heals.

Have Daddy and the 6 month old male both been neutered? If not, they may be fighting to establish dominance. The female glider you lost may have been injured when both males tried to mate with her or while they were fighting over her.

The only thing I can think of where something similar happened ....... A police officer was telling me his wife had some that had babies(I guess she breeds them not sure I never asked) but he said that they kept killing each other because the cage was not big enough......I'm not sure how their living space is but that could be part of it or not enough options on where to sleep....I keep at least 2 pouches to choose from

Do you think one of the youngster did this? The 2 youngster are now alone as both mom and dad passed away. I found the 2 sleeping together in the mat but they came out to eat and is now sitting in opposites corners of the cage and look very tensed.

Watch them closely and see if one is aggressive with the other.....with food/space/pouch/over marking or grooming....if you notice anything separate them into their own cages.

They have a big cages inside the house with lots of sleeping options. This only started after the new girl was born she is now just over 2 months oop, we never had any problems, now we lost both mom and dad in a week. Both of the youngster looks very tensed.

We carry them in a bonding pouch and they are tame, they do not run free, but we can pick them up and hold them without any problems.

I am very sorry to hear of your loss of both mom and dad gliders. Can't imagine of heart broken everyone is.

But from your descriptions, it sounds like one of the little ones is extremely aggressive towards other gliders and I would not keep them together. Also if you do keep them together I would stay up all night with them and see/listen to what happens. You'd think that it will be the male who is aggressive but you never know.

I agree...their colony animals but every Family always has that one out of a million who is trouble....I have a neutered male I can't introduce any males with him....he's even attacked females I've tried to add....he's fine with the current girls I have with him but I had to remove one girl .... I think he was kicking her out of the pouches ....she was sleeping in the toy boxes....now that she's in the other colony she sleeps with everyone.

Wow, I can't imagine what that would be like. I've never heard of such aggressiveness before. Is it possible that mom and dad died of other causes and then the rest were doing the instinctual "cleaning up" that they do? Did you get a necropsy done to find out what mom and dad died of?

I'm so sorry for your loss and I hope the two siblings learn to get along with each other.

I know this will make someone mad, sorry. People please READ the whole post before jumping on the neuter bandwagon.
The dad was already deceased, so taking him to the vet was a moot point.
Poster also stated that the males were both neutered.

I get tired of people posting for help and the first response is "are they neutered". that can come later. people have to start somewhere when becoming glider owners, not everyone knows everything right away. I didn't and am still learning. But to scare people off doesn't help their gliders.

Gliders often times sense weakness in others and will attack the weaker glider as is their nature to do in the wild to protect the colony. Even if the other gliders had done damage to the adults, it's possible this was the case and they were not simply being aggressive. Hopefully the necropsy will reveal an underlying cause of what happened to your babies and you can at least end up with some peace of mind knowing that the others will be safe. I'm so sorry for your loss.
