Hi! So, I just got a new baby sugar glider today, and while I have done research, I've never gotten a baby before and it's been a while since I got a new glider, so all the research is kinda hazy. ( also, the website I was going to look at wasn't working). His out of pouch date is July 22nd, ( this year) so he's still a tiny baby. I have heard that of you put a baby with adults, the baby will get eaten alive! I definitely don't want that! So, is that true? And when will he be big enough they can be introduced and he can go into the cage with my other two gliders? And tonight, should I put a shirt over the top of his cage? ( I have a temporary cage for him) speaking of him, he doesn't have a bald spot on his head, did he just not get it yet? Or is he just... a girl? And should I carry him in the bonding pouch tommorow because I'm not doing anything? Where should I put his cage? I heard I should put it near the other gliders. Cage so they can like.. see each other or something? Anyway, any help would really be appreciate :)
Glidingcameron Glider 128 Posts Ok thanks! O and how long do I wait until I put him in the bonding pouch? I heard that you shout leave them alone for a day, then give them treats, then bonding pouch, and then play with him in like a bathroom? ( will a hour a night with us be enough?) I tell if he's a boy or a girl whether he's got a Pom Pom right? And will it be ok if they all go in the bathroom tonight, supervised, and not in same cage just kinda getting used to each other and such? Last night my other two heard the little guy crabbing and getting scared, and then they started crabbing! Thanks again! Oh and can sugar gliders eat yougurt drops made for rodents as longs as there is no cocoa or something? sjusovare Face Hugger France 694 Posts I'd let him take possession of his new cage for a few days, but don't let him fully alone, sit next to the cage and talk to him. After a few days, you can start using a bonding pouch during the day. Since he is alone in his cage, you will have to spend much night time interracting with him. I would not try bathroom time with all of them together for now, it might be too stressful for him, better make pouch and toy swap between cages for a while before trying to introduce them, so they get familiar with each others smell. And yes, you can tell if it's a male if he has poms, in which case introductions could get more difficult if some of your other gliders are intact males (mines always fit together, but it's not alwways the case) Glidingcameron Glider 128 Posts Thanks! I put him in the bonding pouch today, is that bad? Should I just leave him alone for for then next few days? ( as in not take him out). I heard that 9 weeks oop is too little, does that mean he'll grow up to be tiny and malnourished, and never learn to groom himself or eat solid food? I want to think really optimistically and think, well maybe when he's old enough to go in the cage with the other two, they'll teach him those things! Yea... i kinda doubt that. I finally got him to eat, which is good, today I made some bml ( for him and my older boys) because it is what he's used to. Luckily, it's way better then the instant hpw from exotic nutrition that I was feeding. He hasn't eaten much, he will lick some bml of our fingers and lick some at the plate, but I think he only licked some bml and touched like, one piece of fruit. Should I be worried? I think that a good age to introduce him to the others is maybe, 15 weeks oop, when he is bigger? And also, ( sorry, this is long) but ( bear with me) he doesn't have a wheel in his cage... yet. I'm currently saving up for a double critter nation, ( those are big enough for three gliders, right?) So if possible I'd like to avoid spending 50 dollars on a wheel.. so I wa thinking I could get a wheel on the smaller, less expensive side? Just so he has one? I know that wodent wheels , comfort wheels and silent spinners are out of the question, so maybe a flying saucer or a silent runner ( from exotic nutrition) oh and would the nine inch one work, or would I need the 12 inch one? Thanks again and sorry this was really long :) sjusovare Face Hugger France 694 Posts my joeys usually eats by themselves at 9 weeks (I prefer not separate them from their parents until 12 weeks for socialisation reasons, but 8 weeks seems rather common in the usa so...), so it should not be a problem. If you already started using a bonding pouch and that he replies positively to it, then you can continue. Remember that he is much smaller than an adult glider, so he will not eat full portions yet, just make sure that he does actually eat and drink. I'm not a big fan of flying saucers nor of exotic nutrition whells as a generality, but for a temporary wheel, you can use the silent runner. As for saking, it depends, is it all the time or only when he wakes up? he might also be scared and under lots of stress, he is in a new place where everything seems strange and potentially dangerous to him
