My female gliders pouch is open but only a little and my male glider gets mad if I pick her up and take her away where else my female doesn't like to be away from he now. Another thing he use to not care if she was away but now he does and so does the female.

Female gliders often groom their pouch and leave it slightly open. It is probably perfectly normal.

The two gliders are bonded to each other and will always be concerned when they are separated from each other.

Is you male neutered? If not you may want to have that done as soon as you can unless you are fully prepared to accept the responsibility of raising joeys.

I bought them from a pet store and I don't think so because they are 18 months old.

Pet store gliders often do not come from the healthiest parents and may not have been handled much as young joeys. Bonding with them can take some time.

How long have you had the pair?

There are many tips in the Gliderpedia to help you with bonding. You need to develop the gliders' trust in YOU before you have joeys come OOP because it will be difficult to handle the joeys if the parents are still fearful of you and your hands.

You will want to read this web page if you are planning on allowing these gliders to breed. They may do just fine as parents - but there is also a high chance that the two gliders are related (unless you were given documented lineage 'family tree' showing that they do not have common ancestors) and this could result in problems with the joeys.

Be sure you are feeding them a well balanced diet - as soon as you see lumps in the female's pouch you should offer an extra half portion of the Staple (that provides protein, calcium and vitamins) so that the female will be able to eat an adequate amount to support the joeys.

If you do not have them on one of the widely used glider feeding plans, you may want to look at the various options and choose a good feeding plan for them. I have links on my web page to several widely used feeding plans including my own GliderKids staple recipes to help you locate the information.

Two weeks and they are already bonded with me but when I got them they gave me hard bites but never broke my skin and they had dirrea my male didn't stop shaking until a week ago and now they are really healthy. And also love attention and gliding to me. Ooh and before I forget the female hates me so she is my mothers while the male is mine.

When you got these gliders...did you take them for a vet check and test them for parasites?

You say they are "now really healthy" after a week of shaking and diarrhea?

If they had diarrhea, I would definitely get them tested. It is not un-common for pet store gliders to have parasites.

If your gliders have mated and are bonded to each other(you said one is yours and one is your mothers). Please do not separate them or keep them apart.

They will get very depressed and the male takes care of joeys with the mother.

I will not what I mean by that is that we pay more attention to the one that we each call ours. And no we fid not get them checked because the closest vet is 1 hour and 30 minutes away. But they seem to be healthier scenes got them because they barely moved around the cage and no they spend most of their time gliding and playing with each other around the cage.

Vet care is something that should always be taken into consideration before taking in any animal. Regardless of the vet being an hour and a half away you and your mother need to have these gliders checked out. You'll also need to do some research to find a vet who is experienced with gliders. Many are NOT and will not be able to help very much.

2 weeks is a VERY short amount of time to have expected them to be bonded to you and to have had their health problems simply 'gone away'. It is also not enough time for your to have the ability to know what is a normal pattern for them and to sense when something is not right.

It is good to hear that they are playing in their cage, but the first few days of them being quite and still is normal for any gliders in a new home. It isn't indicative of them suddenly feeling better in regard to health. They can be sick and in need of care well before they go down to the point of it being obvious...and when that does happen...it is often too late to get them past the illness.

Being able to spend time with both of them in order for them to trust you and bond with you is a separate matter that isn't of highest importance at this time...but, favor shouldn't be shown to one over the other. They should get equal time at the same time. They may bond each in their separate way according to their personalities, but give them the chance.

Ok but they glide onto me they go from the bed to me or they run around and come back to check that I haven't left plus I spend about 4 hours with them every day (3 hours during daylight & 1 hour every night) another reason I believe they are healthy is because the signs of illness that they had are gone . The look, feel, act healthy. But I will try to get my father to take them but he doesn't want to take them because he thinks a check up is really pricey.

It will be somewhat "pricey" but the fact that they had diarrhea needs to be checked out even if it is not currently a problem. They need fecal testing because parasites can cause severe health issues - and they can appear to be gone and then re-occur. That is why a well check up with a fecal testing should be done when you bring any new glider into your home - followed by a repeat fecal test after 30 days to be positive the gliders do not have parasites.

If your gliders do have parasites - they can be transmitted to any other pets you have and to members of your family.

"Pricey" vet care is all part of owning an exotic animal as a pet.

If you hope to raise healthy joeys - you must ensure the parents are healthy. Parasites transmitted from parents to very young joeys would probably mean loosing the joeys at a very young age - perhaps even before they are mature enough to come OOP. The parents tend to 'clean up' a lost joey so you may never know it ever existed.

It varies depending on where you live. Gliders are considered exotic pets so their vet care may cost more than a dog or cat would.

You can call vets in your area to find ones that have experience caring for Sugar Gliders and ask what the cost of a well check up and fecal testing will be. The vet can trim nails also - some may charge a fee but most do not.

You would then be able to tell your father how much the cost will be.

You may also want to find out the cost of neutering your male. At some point it will become necessary. If you allow your pair to breed, and if you plan on keeping the joeys, you will also need to neuter all the males (including Dad) if you plan to keep the gliders all together.

If you do not neuter the males - Dad will try to mate with the female joeys. Any male joeys will mature about 4 months OOP and then mate with their mother and with any sisters.

Without neutering - if you keep all of the joeys you will need 3 cages - one for your breeding pair, one for all the female joeys and one for all of the male joeys.

For the cost of the additional cages - you could neuter you male before your glider population explodes.

If you keep two male joeys - they will either need to be neutered or housed separately from their mother once they begin to mature.

You also need to know that having two intact male gliders together can lead to fighting - especially if there is a female glider in the house.

The odor of 3 male gliders each trying to out mark the others may also become overpowering in your home.
