So last Saturday my better half, and I took a 640 mile trip to aquire ourselves a sugar glider. His name was Gizmo, and about 5 years old. Dispite his living conditions he seemed in good health, and thus we took him in. Well we took him to the vet for a wellness check, and he checked out. However when we discussed what diet he was on we were told that even though it may not hurt him his diet was to high in fiber. I researched for weeks as to what diet to put him on, and I decided on the original HPW diet. We provide him with pellets 24 hours a day, and below is a list of fruits, and veggies we offer him. Can someone please confirm what the vet is saying os correct or in correct? If the diet is no good can someone please be very specific in what to give him?

Fruits and veggies list:

Green beans
peas
carrots
corn
green pepper
bok choy
Cucumber
papaya
blackberries
blue berries
strawberries
tomatoes
(Fruit, and veggie list taken from www.newbysglidernook.com

From what im understanding pretty much the only thing our little gizmo needs os the original hpw, and the pellets. anything should be fed in extreme moderation.

Thanks in advance for the help.

The pellets gizmo can do without... You wont really need them if they have a good diet...

I use the Green OHPW, but the OHPW is fantastic!

You can use any of the safe fruits and veggies with this diet plan... Not as restricted...

You do not need to leave the pellets in the cage at all times.

They may actually be the source of the additional fiber since most pellets are grain based and contain fillers.

Some folks leave a few pellets in the cage during the day in case their gliders wake up looking for something to eat. My gliders NEVER get up looking for food during the daytime so I do not leave anything in the cage.

The Original HPW and a wide variety of fruits and vegetables will meet your gliders' nutritional needs.

I agree the pellets can be done without as a diet, however, I still keep a tiny handful of pellets in my glider's cage for their teeth. My vet told me the pellets help clean their teeth.

I have mine on GliderKid's HPW diet. So far so good Fruits and veggies are given every day and I mix it up throughout the week and find different sides to go with the HPW.

So just to confirm everyone here is in agreement that despite Gizmos diet being "high in fiber" we should not be overly concerned as long as we provide him a wide variety of fruits, and veggies along with the OHPW?

Thanks everyone for such a quick response! (:

We do offer pellets but mainly as a snack if we think we my be out late( leave early morning and home after 10 pm) as a snack option for the gliders( little turds like the pellets ). Outside that pellets are not fed often and only a small hand food ( for 4 gliders) to hold them over until we get home. most the time we come in and make food and put items away if we were shopping at the same time, like groceries. We don't like to put their food out before 7 pm most night cause we worry that one of them will pig out and eat all the good stuff before everyone gets up around 9.
