Hope this works, I've been reading the boards a lot but this is my first post. We are going to be getting 2 sugar gliders for the first time (very excited) I want to get them the double critter nation cage. But was wondering if this would work for them for the time being? They will be about 10-12 weeks out of pouch when we get them. This is a used bird cage I found online. Cleaned it up and got it put together. There are a few obvious modifications I need to make to make it more secure but thought before I went to the work i should find out from more experienced people if this cage will even be alright. Also if it is OK I will need to completely do the inside. What would your suggestions be? Do they need ledges or more just climbing ropes that I can make with fleece and pouches and stuff? All suggestions welcome! We'll only need to use this cage for a couple months but I'd like to make it the best I can for them for that time.

I'm not sure of what modification you have in mind, but it appears that the bar spacing is too wide and your babies could get out easily, even adults could and that's not safe. The critter nation cage is a good choice, I believe petsmart has a version like it that's a bit cheaper.

Ledges aren't needed, but having one or two, pending size of cage can be useful in many ways.
Sorry I'm not more explicit, I'm not on my computer right now.

Unfortunately, it appears that the cage has bars that are greater than 1/2 inch apart and your gliders will easily slip out of the cage when ever they want to.

Glider cages must have bar spacing no wider than 1/2 inch.

The only way to make this cage glider safe would be to entirely line the inside of the cage with the same plastic mesh folks use for home made glider cages. It is a sturdy plastic mesh with 1/2 inch square holes sold in the garden section at Lowes or Home Depot.

The mesh has to go on the inside of the bars to prevent the gliders from going between the bars and getting stuck between the bars and the mesh. I would need to be secured at multiple points all over the cage with zip ties. The mesh will however make the cage much harder to clean because each point where the cage bars and the mesh meet is a spot that will collect glider pee and food scraps that will be hard to wipe clean.

Shoot, guess it'll have to be a chinchilla cage then. Thanks.
