Ok, so everything with my 3 girls has been going pretty well. Two are definitely bonded with me, and the last is too she's just still very shaky and VERY bitey. I mean makes me bleed all the time kind of bitey. I'm working with her as slowly as possible. She will sit and sleep on my, which is how I know she's prolly bonded. Well it'd come to the time when I need to clip their nails. I'm really REALLY not comfortable with it. I've clipped nails too short on several different types of animals, on accident of course, but my gliders are tiny and don't have much to loose do I'd rather not. I'm going to try filing their nails. I'm not too worried about peanut or peaches, but Angel, my biter, definitely has me on edge. Any tips or advice to make this easier?

I use the screen pouch, some can still get their teeth through it...but it is much better on everyone involved as they are secure and you can't get a hard bite. Makes it much better on the nerves with one like yours so that you can focus on the nail. http://www.artfire.com/ext/shop/home/SugarGliderJoy

Ohhh the struggle of nail clipping I know it well lol.

The mesh pouch works great, IF you can get your glider into it lol Simon will walk in no worries, I don't need it for Simon

Leela on the other hand, not so much... Last time I tried I had her in there 5 times and all 5 times she was out before I could get the velcro closed. Not just out of the pouch but Jacked up n full of it allllllllllll over my bed! I literally broke out in sweat trying to keep up with her. Needless to say neither of us were very amused

Now, I know my Leela and her fav place to be is in the sleeve of my sweatshirt. So I grabbed my sweatshirt and she dove right on in as expected and I proceeded to funnel her into the mesh pouch. I put the cuff down in the pouch and just worked her down my sleeve until she was inside the mesh pouch and the velcro closed. I was ecstatic !! It was VICTORY!! I WON THE BATTLE

She was not so elated she was IRATE lol and after alll of THAT I still only managed to get like 2 nails clipped. So in the end she still won!!

So I have since found that if I compromise with Leela we can make some progress lol. I don't try to stuff her in the mesh pouch, and she doesn't resist as strongly to me clipping her nails lol

I play with her feet when she is sleeping to get her used to me touching them without clipping. When she got used to it and remained relaxed and asleep I trim her nails. Sometimes I get a whole foot done before she wakes up lol.

I also show her the clippers so she knowsssssss what I'm going to do, let her sniff them, touch them so she knows they won't hurt her, then I pick up a foot and clip! When I'd try to hide the clippers it seemed to stress her out that I was all the sudden coming at her with a weird object...

Over time she has gotten so good about it I can get all her nails done in just a few minutes with no treats. I just did Simon's in like 3 minutes and his back nails are super thick...

If your that nervous get you some reading glasses, and a LED head light you wear on your forehead. Both of these things have given me the confidence and ability to cut their nails safely. I can't imagine cutting their nails without either one of them!!! The light frees up your hands, and the glasses and light help you to see exactly how much you are cutting off!!

Start with a goad of just a couple nails, if the glider starts to stress just put the clippers down for a while and try again later. Progressively work up to doing more nails at one time until you can do all of them with little to no stress.

As for the biter, give him something else to bite on other than you! The vet assistant yesterday gave Leela a ballpoint pen to bite on while they examined her ears and lemme tell ya she bit it and it did distract her mouth from their hands!! Maybe use a plastic straw or something not so hard on their teeth...

Yeh the vet Assistant was awesome I'm still not to sure of the actual Vet though but I felt better when we left this time, and she was at least able to get us in the same day we called.

Ours are biters, particularly Luna. Until we took them to the vet for hissing. While they were there, they went ahead and trimmed their nails. Of course there was an assistant holding her in a big fleece blanket while the other assistant clipped. That worked really well, and I don't think anyone got bit.
So now when we clip their nails, we also use a very large piece of fleece to hold them, and my husband uses some little clippers/scissors he got at Petco or Walgreens or somewhere. He wears crafting goggles to help him see their tiny little nails, and it works pretty well. They know that afterwards they get mealworms and yogurt drops.
We've been clipping their nails now about once a month for the last 2 years, and they don't like it, but they are pretty good about it. I am so worried that I will break a little leg when I pull it out.
