Maple is 8 weeks old and I just got her Monday, since then we've bonded so well. I don't think it's caused by stress because she cares for me so much from what I see. I feed her chicken and apple baby food mixed with equal parts yogurt and 1/4 teaspoon honey. She loves it but she has been having A LOT of diarrhea! I don't know what's causing it, it's really scaring me because I know how dangerous it is for them to get dehydrated. I've been giving her Apple juice because she rarely drinks water unfortunately which is why I'm a nervous wreck. As I'm writing this she is jumping around her cage having a great time which is why I think it's not that serious but I'm still very afraid of anything happening to her. Any tips or advice is much appreciated this is my first sugar glider so I'm very inexperienced. I'm making her BML as I just ordered the supplements needed for it, I did research and my multi vitamin in violate and for calcium I just ordered human grade calcium carbonate.

Maybe stop the yogurt to see if it clears up? I heard too much yogurt can cause it. I am still new so maybe others have better advice

Thank you for the reply! Yea I'm thinking maybe that could be it because I have given her a lot of yogurt. Every time she'd crab I gave her a little treat of yogurt so she'll bond to me quicker and I may have over fed her. I keep giving her Apple juice so she won't be dehydrated any other insights would be much appreciated.

getting her onto a proper staple diet will help clear her diarrhea. make sure if you feed BML that you are feeding the limited fruits and veggies that have low levels of calcium and high in phosphorus.

What are examples of those because I was just going to give her watermelon and I haven't decided on a vegetable but I'm open to suggestions for fruit and veggies.

If you feed BML then you are restricted to feed frozen pitted cherries, cantaloupe, watermelon, apples or blueberries. And for the veggies- peas, corn, carrots, or greenbeans. Feed a combination nightly . For more information go to www.bmldiet.com

Gliders have to get a variety of fruits and veggies nightly along side their nectar like staple, such as BML

There are several widely used "suggested" or "recommended" diets. http://www.bmldiet.com/bml-recipe.html Bml is the first one I typically suggest to new owners because it's easy to make, the ingredients aren't that expensive and the fruits n vegs list may seem restrictive but they are some of the favorite fruits n veg for gliders. The creator of Bml is Bourbon Hackworth https://www.facebook.com/bourbonh who is happy to answer any questions you may have.

There are other widely used diets out there, like critter love hpw, the Tpg diet and a few others.

"staple diets" are what we call these recipes, they provide vitamins and minerals the gliders body needs. If you would like more links and information on diets I'd be happy to give you more links to have a look at. You might also want to ask what diet the breeder uses that you got your glider from, reputable breeders usually use a well known diet.

Thank you to everyone that responded you all were very helpful. I'll keep updating the post on how Maple is doing, hopefully the staple diet will do the trick.

Just came home from work to a very sick Maple, she had a lot of diarrhea and pee'd a lot. Should I still give her the BML? Or just give her some fruit for tonight like an apple to keep the diet bland?

It could be a combination of stress, and a change from what she was being fed before. Do you know what diet she was on previously?

Give her the BML, mixed vegetables and a little of the allowable fruits.

http://www.bmldiet.com/index.html

If she is not better by tomorrow morning - you need to look for a vet to see her.

Do not give her apple juice (other than what is in the BML recipe) - it may be the cause of the diarrhea because it is high in sugar - natural sugar but still sugar. She needs to have plain water to drink.

You can also use plain Pedialyte - but not the flavored type as it contains artificial sweeteners.

If you are making BML - use only the REPCAL Herpivite and REPCAL Calcium in the mixture. Substituting supplements will change the balance of the staple diet. Different products contain different amounts of vitamins or calcium.

I believe she was just eating like apples with a little yogurt on top, that's what I gave her the first night which is what I should've kept giving her because that didn't give her diarrhea. I'm feeding her Apple and watermelon tonight just plain fruits as to not upset her stomach further. I feel like the BML is too heavy for her right now with the diarrhea. Any other things I should be worried about? She won't drink the water that's why I was giving her Apple juice.

I would highly advise you to not restrict her protein, because gliders need 90% of their diet to be protein. Like the person before said I would also lay off so much apple juice because of the sugar. One thing I did when my glider wasn't drinking much was I just mixed in a bit of apple juice to her water, so it was still sweet but she wasn't getting an overload of sugar, but still staying hydrated. I also sometimes put a little drop of honey at the end of her water bottle to encourage her to use it. And I'm not sure if this will work, but maybe try giving your glider more solid foods like hard boiled egg, steamed carrots, oatmeal, and a little bit of fruit so maybe her stool will not be so runny. I hope this helps!

Also, I saw someone else say on another post that giving canned pumpkin to suggies can help with diarrhea and other stomach problems, so you might try that.

pumpkin is for constipation.....you need to get her WATER. Apple juice is too high in sugar for her little body to be drinking all the time. she will get used to drinking it.

a staple diet is VERY important. it will help with the stomach problem. after she has been eating a staple diet for a while and if the diarrhea continues, then she needs to see a vet right away.

I have some good news although I did not feed her protein last night she did not have diarrhea. She had apples and watermelon chunks and ate it all up. She was very active and happy and I see solid stool in her cage. If I feed her the BML mix with fruits and veggies tonight will she have more diarrhea since she's not used to it?

She may have a bit of an upset stomach but it will clear within a few days of eating her new staple
