Hello Everyone!

I am new to the forum and wanted to ask a few questions. I spoke to some breeders already, but my boyfriend thinks they are just saying what I want to hear so I will purchase the animal.

We are looking at getting two baby females (preferably already bonded to each other). I want to get y'alls opinion on some of the things we've heard.

First, we were told that females only have a 50/50% chance of liking each other and if not, one will kill the other.

Secondly, my boyfriend is determined they will smell awful all the time even with regular cleaning.

Third, I was told they are very loud all the time. I know they make crabbing sounds as babies and bark too, but do they do it all the time for no reason?

Lastly, I heard from a few people you can potty train them with a lot of patience and persistence. Is that true?

I work days and he works nights so bonding won't be an issue. I own my own business and planned to wear them in a pouch at work and keep a cage in my office. I have severe insomnia so I am usually up a few days in a row and can play with them on the nights I don't sleep too. My boyfriend gets home around 3am so he would wear them around and play with them when he gets home from work.

I have done a ton of research, picked out a vet in town that has worked with gliders for years, put all the supplies in my cart for when we are ready. I just need to convince the boyfriend.

Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome to the forum! I'm sorry no one has answered your questions before but hope some more will hop in with their opinions.

I'm afraid I don't know the answer to your question about the odds of random females liking each other but I can assure your boyfriend that they will not smell awful "all the time". In fact, he probably won't even notice the smell after a couple of days of living with them.

I don't believe they can be potty trained, certainly mine aren't but I haven't got that kind of patience.

There is an incredible feeling when an animal loves and trusts you enough to fall asleep in your hands or your pocket.

my wife has done 6 or more introductions, we have had one female rejected all others were successful. but we just tried and older male alpha of our 6 glider colony with a alpha female of 2 glider colony, they would not except each other.

i don't mind the scent is small to me, the wife feels it is stronger, but we need to clean the glider room better also, just don't clean to much, leave some scent behind or they will remark the cage

Third, I was told they are very loud all the time. I know they make crabbing sounds as babies and bark too, but do they do it all the time for no reason?
during the day you would not hear a thing in my house. our gliders dont really crab anymore, just one. at night they run and play and jump around cage, if in your bedroom you will hear them, barking once or twice a night about 5 minutes long. ours have a separate bedroom and we don't hear them much.

Lastly, I heard from a few people you can potty train them with a lot of patience and persistence. Is that true?
my wife takes her gizmo out of pouch, puts him on cage shelf and rubs his back, he will pee and poo in about 5 minutes of less, then she puts him in her bra and he is good to go.

One thing to add on the potty training.
most gliders go pee and poo after waking up and coming out of pouch. but some
of mine seem to save a little JUST FOR ME. I will go into the glider room and they
will jump on me and give me a small pee, a few drops. I think this may be to mark me as part of their property.
Also I will carry one on my shoulder to the kitchen and get some live mealworms
for them to eat. after eating about 3 or 4 mealies they will start to lift their
tail in the air, I will lean over the trashcan and out pops a little poo and
usually it falls into the trashcan. but the poo is usually solid and rolls or
comes off real easy.

I don't believe that female thing is true, I've housed alot of females together before and that has never happened, but to be fair, I put 2 cages next to eachother and put one in each and let them get used to eachother for a few days and let them run around under my supervision together before I put them in the same cage, and they were fine together.

They do not smell at all if properly taken care of, only unneutered males smell bad.

They are not loud all the time for no reason, not at all. They will crab ALOT most likely when you first get them, but after they calm down for maybe 2 days they'll be fine and will only crab if you scare them or open their pouch. After you're bonded the crabbing should cease all together.

They CANNOT be potty trained, they are neat by default anyways and will not go in their pouches where they sleep.

Just to make sure you know and the breeders didn't give wrong information, they NEED a staple diet to be healthy. A staple diet example is HPW, a high protein diet, now, this is fattening for non-breeding sugar gliders, I'd recommend BML, but I only feed HPW since I breed so this'll be the example.

Ingredients in HPW:

(1 month supply for 2 gliders)

1/4 cup ZooPro High Protein Supplement(increase to 1/2 cup if feeding to lactating female gliders) (48$)
