So my baby broke out of his cage last night and found his way not he toilet and don't know how long he's been in there. I have no xperience with wet gliders because I've never had to bathe one. He's always been really good about cleaning himself. What do I do?! Im holding him against my skin right now with a blank trying to keep him warm but he's shivering like crazy and I think he might have gotten water in hi nose because h keeps blowing out hard like he's trying to clear it out. Please tell me what I should do!

I think I would have the vet. check him out. Just keep him as warm as you can. I would be more worried about him having gotten water in his lungs and coming down with an respiratory infection than the being wet part.

Yeah that's what I was worried about. Thankfully my vet was able to squeeze me in for an appointment this afternoon.

Get him as dry as you can and keep him warm until then. A lady on one of the forums posted about her glider falling in the toilet and treading water for hours. She was VERY lucky - the glider was OK but also vet checked for liquid in the lungs. Your little guy sounds lucky too so far. Hopefully the vet will give him the all clear too. Good luck!

For anyone else reading this post, this is why we say CLOSE ALL TOILET LIDS!
It's not very pretty but I have a yellow "Post-It-Note" stuck to the inside of my bathroom doors reading "PLEASE CLOSE TOILET LID!"
You can also get some hardware mesh...the same stuff many wheel tracks are made of and make a toilet ladder. You just bend it so there is a bit of a lip, the toilet seat holds it down...that way IF it were to ever happen, they can get out.

Now that he's dry he seems to be doing better. Hopefully the vet will think so too. Thanks for he advice. I will definitely remember to close the lid from now on.

Drowning in the toilet is the NUMBER ONE cause of accidental death to sugar gliders!

I'm so glad you found your little one before it was too late. Be sure you do take him to the vet anyway to check for fluid in the lungs. He may be fine but you never know.

The vet said he seems perfectly healthy. She told me to watch for signs of a cold and if I notice anything to bring him back in, but otherwise he seems fine. Thanks for the support. I have definitely learned my lesson and will be much more cautious in the future.

Don't beat yourself up. Yes, it could have ended badly, BUT IT DIDN'T. Count your blessings, share your personal experience with newbys, keep toilet lids closed as well as emptying any cleaning buckets ect., and give that baby extra hugs & kisses.

OH I am so glad to hear this!!! YAY!!! I had a scary situation once that just about gave me a heart attack - it totally could have ended HORRIBLY but instead, we were lucky. It happens - Jazz is right, count your blessings and proof that house!

Also keep the lids on any jugs, if a glider can squeeze in they can get in and drown.
One gal found her glider just minutes before he gave up treading water in a gallon jug half full of water. She had to cut open the jug to get him out.

Watch out for flower vases also:
not to worry, these are artificial flowers but you can see how it could be a problem especially if the vase is not a clear one. I filled that one with glass stones after Corky decided it was a fun place to explore.

Oh dear I never even considered that before. I am definitely going to be much more aware of drowning hazards from now on.
