Hi,

I have 3 gliders and we are dealing with our first injury. One of my girls has a very swollen face. It is just the left side but it is huge. I rushed her to the vet as soon as I saw it and they lanced it and put her on antibiotics. Has anyone had something similar happen? They said they think she got bit but can't really tell. My gliders get along well and have for the whole 3 years they have been together. They are almost 4 years old. I wonder if she could have got scratched when they were sleeping because they all sleep huddled up together, they always have. Do antibiotics work pretty well with them? Is there anything else I can do for her to help her heal? I asked if I needed to keep her separate but the vet felt it might make her sad to be away from the others. I have been reading on other forums about fighting but I know this wasn't because of a fight. She isn't afraid of the other two and she was so happy to get back in bed with them after we got home from the vet. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

swollen faces/swollen eyes are usually symptoms of an abscess.
Clavamox ( antibiotic) or baytril ( antibiotic) are what are usually used for abcesses personally I like clavamox better for any facial stuff.

Make sure you finish the antibiotic course.

It's fine for her to be back in with her colony as long as no one is targeting her.

If this heals up and it happens again she will need xrays and possibly a tooth pulled.

Antibiotics work well for gliders, providing you complete the course as directed. But that doesn't mean she won't start showing symptoms again if the absess is still present.

They gave her baytril and she is to take it for 5 days but he said if you want to just give it to her till it is all gone that it wouldn't hurt. His first thought was abcesses as well but came back after and said he thought it could be a bite. Will this hurt her eye? the pressure from all that infection? She had a lot of puss. He said this could affect her eye. It doesn't matter to me if she ever looks the same or if she has extra needs we will do whatever we have to for her. He said her face might not look the same after this.

usually once the infection is treated the eye is fine if its an abscess. A potential bite... could have done more damage. I can't really say without seeing pics

The baytril... depends how much they gave you. I wouldn't give it for more than 10 days that is the longest antibiotics are usually given to gliders.

If there is broken skin or open wound get some vetericyn to spray on it a few times a day. It's safe on the eyes and safe if licked and helps wounds heal much faster. https://www.amazon.com/Vetericyn-Wound-Skin-Care-Spray/dp/B006UJGZNG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1511823160&sr=8-2&keywords=vetericyn+vf

It's good stuff to have on hand.

I tried to upload a photo and it said it did to the main album but I am new here and have no idea where or what that is. I warn you it looks so bad. She does have an open wound because the vet wanted it to drain more. I am going to get the wound wash tonight! thank you for that link. The picture is titled fiona, that is her name if you know where the main album is.

aww poor baby definately get the vetericyn put it on as much as you can as many times a day as you can. It sounds horrible but spray it right on her whole face it's a light mist and won't hurt her.

reallllllllllllllly pay attention to her if you don't separate, the other gliders may try to clean her wound to "help" her n make it worse and you won't hear a thing.

With it that open I would even say just separate her to prevent that from happening. Neck wounds start out smaller than that and get made considerably worse from cage mates trying to clean it.

I have a travel cage and I could put her in it and put that inside the big cage with them. Do you think that would work? Or should I just put it beside their cage so she can see and smell them? How long should I separate them? I can wear her in a pouch during the day so she won't be so lonely. You don't know how much I appreciate all the advice. I am at petco now looking for that spray.

no cages inside cages. Put her travel cage no closer than 12 inches from the other cage, to prevent any tail injuries. Tails stick out of bars about 7 inches, a glider can reach about 2 or 3 inches so at least 12 inches is safest.

You can swap their sleep pouches every other day or so if your worried about reintroductions.

Keep them seperated until there is no open wound and no scab, gliders will target inconsistencys and try to remove them.

Fiona looks better today. You can tell she feels better. Last night when I put their food out she was pushing everyone out of the way. She was eating like a little champ. I made sure that her favorite was in the bowl. Fresh cucumber really makes her happy. She is drinking a lot of water. Her face is still swelled a lot but it looks less inflamed than it did yesterday. I have been using the spray which she does not like but with that and the meds she seems to be on her way back to normal.

Hi,

I will be glad to update you! She is feeling much better. Her eye still isn't open and her face is still big but it is down to 50%. She is eating like crazy and I have been giving her extra pine nuts (her favorite) and eggs for extra protein to help her heal. She is one of my 2 that snub their nose at mealworms. They just won't eat them. I will upload a pic of her that I took just a couple of hours ago. She is going back to the vet on Tuesday. She has had every dose of her antibiotics we didn't miss any and I have sprayed her face several times every day with the spray that was suggested above. I wondered about Neosporin but I don't want to try that until I know for SURE it won't hurt her. She has about 2 doses left of her meds and I am going to give them to her tomorrow. If you guys can tell me anything else to do please advise. I appreciate all the help as this is new territory none of them have ever been sick or injured before.

In the post above, the bottom photo was taken right after we got home from the vet. The vet is 100 miles round trip so it probably took us about 45 minutes to get home. The top photo was taken a couple of hours ago. It still needs something done so we are going to a follow-up Tuesday. I just want her well. She don't have to look like she did before, I still think she is beautiful and she's my baby girl no matter what she looks like. But I want her to be healthy anything else we will deal with as it comes.
