It's not a bad ideal at all.your only trying to help others when they need it and no one says life is easy but we all gotta start somewhere and it dose take time to get everything in order.you put a lot of thought in to this so don't let it go to waste.people are always gonna ask question to something they can't yet understand and some will help you by giving good advice all you can really do is show them and make them understand.I wish you luck on everything in I would be happy to have someone like you to watch mine cause you know what it takes to care from them.best wishes

I guess my opinions are these, and please don't take my words in a negative tone as they are not meant that way:

Anyone bringing you their gliders should already have their own cage, tent and supplies. The only way you would have to supply anything Is if the supplies were substandard like a broken wheel or cage that is too small. In those cases let the gliders use your stuff, don't charge them for the supplies, and you keep what you bought when they pick up their gliders. Thoroughly sterilize everything they used with bleach, which I'm sure you will do.

If you are running a business to make money then the prices are comparable but if you are fostering for people in unfortunate circumstances they are way too high.

In the situations where someone could not have their gliders due to a lost job, medical condition, or new baby there is no way they could afford those prices...unless the new parents made enough money.

I would be more apt to ask one of the breeders I got my babies from to foster for me. As a matter of fact I am actually going to need an experienced glider parent to watch my babies for me for 2 1/2 to 3 months while I go to Chaplain/RP Expeditionary Skills Training with the Marine Corps. I am very blessed that a member of his board volunteered. She came recommended to me by the breeder I got Kodi, Arwyn, and Kichi from. The breeder would have watched my babies too but she's going to be out of town for part of the time and eight more gliders is something we didn't want to bother her hubby with.

I am def not made out of money and while I have a good amount saved for vet bills and care credit as a back up, I def cannot afford the 300.00 it would cost to keep my gliders with you. Again, I don't mean this in a negative way at all, just my opinions. Also, IMO, dogs and cats are not like gliders. Yes, gliders are higher maintenance diet wise but dogs need to be walked, played with, loved on, etc as well. You are experienced in taking care of gliders so that is a plus. Cats have needs too and actually need more space than gliders, depending on the cat. Having fostered/adopted a myriad of animals in my short lifetime I have found gliders and ferrets easier to care for than most dogs and cats. Another thought....most kennels walk the dogs at least three times a day, feed twice a day, play, groom, etc...but fall short on small animals bc they do not have staff experienced enough to do anything but feed, water, and clean but yet still charge the high fees for their time and to me, that is not right...so if given no other options then having my gliders with you would absolutely be better than having to rehome them but 300.00 a month would be a lot of money.

I for one would take in foster gliders in a heart beat once I'm in a house in va and I have separate rooms for mine and the fosters. But since I wouldn't be in business and wouldn't advertise I guess only people on this board would know I could help them if they need it.

But again...since it will be a business and businesses are here to profit you can charge hat you feel people will pay....I would feel bad even thinking about charging that...but that is just me and I guess I'm just a sucker for animals lol. Cost of living in Cali is way too high for what we get but there is a ranch up the road from me who kennels a few different pets. Dogs are kept in indoor/outdoor runs, walked, played with, med's given, etc, all for 10$ a day and less for long term. Pets that are indoor pets stay that way and are housed inside the 4000 sq foot house.. Vet checks and signing of forms are required. They also board horses for those who have horses on their land but must go out of town for whatever reason, and that is only 300.00 a month for a stall/ pasture....which is actually less than most permanent horse boarding facilities in southern Cali....

Ask yourself can I afford the vet bills for any accidents or if yours gets ill? Am I willing to put in the time this is going to take? It takes me all night just about. Will this time take away from my children? Are you ready for crying and pissed off gliders for about the first week? I can tell you from experiences over the years I am in the red when it comes to the gliders and I sell a joey here or there. Even if I had charged for fostering/sitting or whatever it's still never enough. Then what happens when that foster situation becomes a dump and you never hear from them again, rehome? Texas is full of gliders. I am not trying to be negative Nelly here just want you to think about all those things, You have been to my house, you see what I am responsible for, It may look easy but its not. You have one cage that you got from me, the owner swore she was coming back for those gliders, never heard from her again until I rehomed them to you and then she was glad they had a good home but I hung onto them, fed them, loved on them, tented them when I could for 6 months before I decided to rehome them. I did not charge you anything cause to be honest it is ridiculously hard to get money for grown gliders. They had a strong bond with their previous owner, char cried for 2 nights, I sat with her talking to her. Come on over and help with cage cleaning tomorrow, I will help put it in perspective for you.I know they have formed a bond with you but it will NEVER be like the one they had with their first slave. So sad people dont realize these tiny animals bond so closely with their owners. I also never charge for sitting, I have sat quite a few gliders over the years while their slaves went on vacation. Why because I enjoy gliders, all gliders, I study them, I am fascinated by them and I love to kiss all their little heads.

I'm just going to nix the whole thing. Hubby and I just figured we had the cabin and it would offer some help so that people had an option if they didn't want to rehome their gliders but had no one else to take them, or if they were going on vaca but didn't want to pay for a vet/pet sitter to have them sit in the cage with no interaction except maybe feeding them the right way...maybe. We would have worked with anyone, just the base was $10-$12...if you can afford a vaca figured that wasn't bad considering everyone elses prices.

Can't win for losin.

You just have a bad case of glideritis. So you just need to come over here and love on some of mine for a quick Sugar fix! Maybe tomorrow or next day?

It sounds like you have already decided not to do this but I was just going to add that clear fecal results need to be presented to you upon intake. And, I would have tweaked "tent time" unless you could really sanitize that sucker between colonies. But, I think that's moot..just wanted to toss the ideas out there in case anyone else was brewing this one up too.

Hi DB... I had previously said that they would have to have the all clear from the veterinarian and yes I had planned on cleaning the crud out of the tent, I already do rofl (I had said wipe everything with bleach wipes and a steamer) ;)

I actually still really want to do it, but I feel like no one wants it to BE done...and/or they don't read the thread...the same points keep being brought up.

However, hubby has read the thread & pms and said that there must not be a need for it from what everyone is saying.

If anyone else is thinking of doing this I wish you the best of luck.

It was brought up somewhere else that maybe I should offer this "locally" (Texas and surrounding states) instead of Nation wide. I am going to talk to hubby about that one; I still might do the hotel/foster!

I also have someone talking to me about bringing their gliders for Thanksgiving and/or Christmas breaks...so, that will be a "test" for ya'll I would imagine.

You Go Girl, Just get an emergency kit, and keep good records as well as some things maybe others can think of that I can't. I know how to sub q and have the supplies for that, heaven forbid we should ever have to.

CC, by all means, I think you wanting to help owners in need help keep their gliders is a great idea actually...I am sure that those going on vacation could use the service too....and in further posts you explained each situation would be treated differently and that is good...I was only giving you my opinion with regard to my own life. If I had the resources you have I would def be helping other glider parents out when I could....people have helped me in the past so I pay it forward.

I think responders only wanted to help you think of issues that might arise that you may not have thought of. I speak for myself when I say it wasn't meant to discourage you from helping others...
