The easiest and best way to tell is, when they are on the cage side look about where you would think the belly button would be. On the female, it has a vertical slit running up and down, the males have what may look like a little pompom lower down. they should both be visible, providing the male hasn't been neutered. If the male has been, then the slit is all you can go by. The neutered males have the pompom gone, but they have no slit. . Good luck..
