The decision between whether a male or a female is preferred is of debate amongst many owners. I think there are pros and cons to each and each person must weigh out their priorities. As far as the midnight barking, it will absolutely keep you awake! Keep in mind that these guys are nocturnal so chances are you will be staying up late anyway to give them the attention that they need. Mine are in my bedroom and a lack of sleep is one of the negatives but if an owner is really committed ( because it is like having children) you get used to very little sleep. Hope this helps a little. Oh yeah, those prices sound about right but I would be wary of pet shops.
