Have you tried a soft light in the room where he is to lessen the barking. He's probably trying to get your attention for some "play time". It is also a way they communicate with other SG. Could be calling out for a response. Mine will usually quiet down if I just talk to them softly for a minute and make them move from the place they are when they are barking.
As for veggies, have you tried fresh raw veggies. Also mine like the Gerber mixed vegies. They won't eat it every day but about every third day they will eat quite a bit.
Also Bourbon's modified ledbetters might work for you.
