There are probably cases where some people have to chose between being evicted from their apartment and giving away their gliders...
I presently live in a building that doesn't allow cats or dogs, (or large fish tanks) and barely tolerates birds and caged rodents. At first, I took a chance, like all of those who have cats and dogs here and sneek them out of the building on the day of the inspection once a year; After reading a lot about gliders and building the cage and all, I introduced the gliders to the building manager and he loved them. His take on it was: if they live in a cage, it's fine. I told him there would not be odour problems (my mouse smells more than my two gliders) or apartment damage (carpets, etc), and that they would not cause more allergy problems than a hamster would. He seemed satisfied. He knows I carry them on me when they sleep in the day time. He would probably not be thrilled about the gliders playing free in the apartment at night though...

So it may be this prospect [that gliders may need to get abandoned for someone who lives in an apartment that forbids pets (or exotic pets) not to be evicted] that led to this statement.
Also, if the cage is large, You can't hose it down regularly in an apartment.

Aside from this, I don't know what could have motivated it.
