I own both. 4 SG with 4 week oop joey and 1 ferret, Bridgette. She is the easiest pet, other than cats, which I also have to maintain. She is litter box trained, will walk outside with a lease, will entertain herself for hours in the house playing (make sure to have collar with bell) and loves to get a bath.
Mine was descented and spade (sp) when I bought her and we have not had any problem with smell. Probably because she loves a bath and gets on about every 10 days.
SG are VERY HIGH MAINTENANCE pets; their diets are strict and sometimes very frustrating; vets are hard to find and when you do they are very expensive; since they are nocturnal be prepared to stay up very late if you give your SG any quality time.
I got my ferret several years after having SG. I don't know your age or your home situation. It is just my opinion that perhaps a ferret is the best choice.
Feel free to correspond via aol should you want to discuss this more.
Good luck with your choice.
