I haven't heard that about their not eating mealies or crickets that early nor have I had a problem. Mine have always jumped on them and DOWN THEY GO.
Use the tweezers on mealies, tho. Crickets I just hand one at a time thru the cage - but don't pull the back legs off so they can't jump. Mine like to pull them off and eat first.
I can tweeze mealies and hand them crickets, but I CANNOT bait a hook with a worm. Go figure.
