I have to take my glider to the vet to have his nails clipped, I have tried several times to do it myself & your right they will not sit still. And like you I was afraid that I would hurt him. The vet does it in a few minutes, also our vet said that it is better that they do it this way "we are not the bad guys doing something they do not like", which I thought was a good idea! Our vet charges only $7.00 which is well worth it to me not to have to try it myself. It is important that they are cut because they tend to get stressed when their nails get caught on something.
