As some of you may already know, I am very interested in getting a sugar glider. I'm just wondering what kind of toys they like. I read that they like cat and hamster and other small animal toys but I'm still not really sure exactly what they like. Thank you very much for all your help! I need all the information I can get! raspberry wink smile

www.gliderconnection.com has some toy stuff. They like wodden wheels, and many glider owners can tell you they Luv strings and ropes. Hope this helps.

No, not strings. Ropes are okay but don't use strings as they could get tangled up in them and accidentally choke themselves to death or cut off circulation to a limb and lose that limb! This is very important. I just got a shocked reaction when I saw Kiwi list strings as a toy! frown

They chase feathers just like cats. It's so CUTE!

I meant to put something else, sorry. I did however, hread some websites about how people are saying how their gliders love to play with strings which is odd. I just figured if some people were giving them to their gliders then they would be ok. Only one person mentioned any trouble. But please follow Tessa's advice.I hope those people have checked this message.

Feathers are great -- they love to chase, pounce, and generally tear them up. I also use small balls, which we toss against the wall, and they tear after them, pounce, then carry back to me to throw again. Mine also have a small plastic pill box that opens -- we put a small treat inside (like one kernel of corn), and they have to get it open to get the treat out. Make sure you don't get any toys that have catnip, and watch for parts that they could get their little fingers stuck in (for example, I don't use the little round bells, like Xmas bells, because they can get a finger into them and get it stuck).

Strings are fine if YOU'RE playing w/ them. Like a shoe string. Yes, they'll play w/ them like kitty cats. Don't ever let them play w/ those if you're not around to supervise them. What I do is, I hold it and shake it around and she'll come running to pull on it, etc..

i use a oatmeal box (round) and they get in it and roll it across the floor. one did that this morning and another chased it. it was so funny, it hit a wall and the little guy backed it up and started over. i use the string from my nightgown and swat them with it and they bat at it like kittens do. any old box or shoe is fun for exploration. i'm going to get some plastic balls to put in a plastic box and make them a ball box like at chucky cheeses where the kids wallow in balls.

hehehe - I learned this first hand when I tried to get ready for work with the gliders out - they wouldn't let me floss my teeth! Too funny! smile smile

Someone posted that they like to play with cotton balls too. I'm amazed that they will "play ball" like that with you! I may try it soon.

P.S. the only feathers I've been able to fine are brightly dyed ones. Are those okay?

Apparently the chains are a bad idea because they might get pinched and worse... raspberry

Sorry-
When I said "bird chains with bells" I meant the small ones that are made for parakeets. Large parrot toys can be risky to use.

Debbie, I wouldn't recommend the dyed feathers, since you can never be sure what chemicals/dyes might cause problems. If you want, e-mail me your mailing address (don't post it here!) and I'll send you some peacock feathers -- my mother-in-law's neighbor keeps several peacocks, so I stock up every time I visit her.

Strings can be dangerous. You have to becareful of anything that may have a loose string on it too. That is how my LeRoy got in trouble. When he was given to me, he came with a knit hat that they said he slept in. So figuring he was scared enough I let him continue to sleep in it. Of course on the 3rd night I had him he managed to get his testicles caught in a loose piece of yarn in the hat. Imagine trying to cut the yarn off of that! I took him the the vet right away because they (his testes) were about 4 times their normal size, distended from his abdomen and purple. The vet said that luckily that was all he got caught in the yarn! LeRoy is now nuetered and I don't put anything in the cages that is made of yarn and I always look for any loose threads.

anything *safe* you have lying around can be a toy. my room is glider-proofed, there's nothing potentially poisonous, shocking, sticky, sharp etc. where Juno could get at it. gliders are really curious =) so when she's riding on my shoulder i'll let her explore everything =). golf balls can be really funny, they can't bite them or scratch them, but Juno wraps herself around it and rolls around. anything that rolls seems like it's pretty fun, and anything different is fun too, so change things around a lot. i got Juno a eucalyptus tree (like 10' tall!) and i usually hang stuff from it by leather thongs (not yarn or string!) cuz she can't get tangled in it (it's also taught if there's something hanging, of course). anything that moves, makes a noise, is new and different, can be a toy. the best stuff is always whatever you can do with your glider. during the summer, we usually get moths in the house, so i get a long stick and we go moth hunting. this is good for escaped crickets, too. things that roll and can be climbed in, on or around are great too, just be careful tails or nails can't get caught! the more you change things around, the more fun your glider will have =)
