Hello Everyone,
I haven't been to this list in almost a year, but hope that it's still as great as it was before(sure looks different).
I really need some help. I had my gliders for over three years now, but couple months ago I started to notice that my baby girl seems to have seizures or what looks like it. she over sudden freezes, falls back and then forward. Her limbs and body go numb. She makes sounds like she is chocking, her tongue comes out, and I can see liquid going out of her mouth and sometimes nose as well. After about 30 seconds she starts to move slowly and couple seconds after that she is back to normal. As far as I can tell, these incidents are not connected to anything specific in her habitat, but I'm lost. I don't know what's happening and how to help her. I never heard of case of epilepsia in gliders. Even though she is almost two years old and has been with her mate for all this time they never had little ones. I don't know if it has anything to do with the situation, but I'm trying to let you know all what's going on and hope someone has a suggestion for me. I would appreciate any help or advise.
TIA, Olga

The first and most urgent piece of advice is for a quick trip to the vets. Animals this small tend to decline very rapidly so please do not put this off. My wife lost her glider a few months back to hypoglycemia. Your gliders symptoms look very similiar. Please ask your vet to test for this. Until someone else posts some more knowledgable advice I'd suggest some apple juice. This always seemed to help my wifes Arrow. Lots of luck and my prayers will go for your glider.

i can only agree....go to the vet..if your glider is having seizures there may be a type of medication you can give her to help...good luck.

Thanks for advise guys, but going to the vet is pointless here. Whenever one of my other babies had hind leg paralysis couple years ago, I had to tell the vet what to do. And thanks to internet my baby boy is fine now (well, he is about 4 now, not a baby I guess) Can you tell me more about hypoglycemia? What other symptons did Arrow have? And how did apple juice help? It interests me because Furby (my baby) always attacks Glideraid and simply devoures it in seconds after her spells. I cut the Glideraid out of her diet and has not seen any seizures for a while untill last night, so I guess that was not a solution even though it decreased the frequency of spells. What did the vet suggest for Arrow (i'm sorry about your loss)? Thank you for your help, and let me know if you have info on knowledgeable vet in Mobile, Pensacola, New Orleans areas. I'll drive to see someone who knows what he/she is doing.
Thank you guys,
Olga : )

Hi, I'm Tessa, Arrow's mommy, and he had hypoglycemia. I don't know what is in glideraide but hypoglycemia is low blood sugar that the vet said the glider's can die from. Unfortunately, my baby Arrow did die... frown He was sooo sweet. If you go to the links from on top of the page and go to Bourbon's glider info, it'll have Real Stories on it and you go to Arrow's name and it will give you the details on hypoglycemia and his experience as well as mine. I thought I had caught it on time and he was doing really well but something happened and he had a seizure and well...you know. frown The apple juice will help keep the sugar level up in the blood. I can't say for sure if that is what your glider's problem is but I would get her to the vet to at least check the sugar level in her blood to determine if that is really it. These animals are so small though, and if somehow without your knowledge she had fallen and hit her head, she could have brain damage and maybe it could be a type of eplileptic seizure. If they were to fall in their cage, it's like you or me falling off the roof of a house. It can really hurt them. Good luck and I would refer you to my vet but I'm in Maryland and don't know any vets in your area. Sorry and good luck. I am praying for you!!!

Go to http://www.sugarglider.net message board and search the archives on hypoglycemia ... there should be alot of information for you to use.
One more very important thing ... READ FAST. This condition can kill a glider very very fast ... not to mention the possible brain damage from the seizures she is having.
If you are going to continue to have gliders, then it would probably be well worth your while to print out the health information for the vet in your area. It would definitely be beneficial for your gliders.
You might also want to post @ sugarglider.net under health&hygiene for people who have been instrumental in educating vets on glider care. I know I have seen posts from a few people who have made this their mission in their area.
Good luck and keep us posted on your glider's health.

Thank you everyone for posting. I try to hurry up, however, i just went through my notes on Furby (my baby) she started having seizures in July 2000. She had about one seizure a month. After playing with some things in her habitat and finally cutting out Glideraid in November, her spells stoped until couple nights ago. She hadn't had any since. Reading some on hypoglycemia, I have more and more doubts that it's what she has. However, I lean more to the idea that her health condition is connected to her inbreeding. I'm still researching though... She seems perfectly healthy other than her spells and does not exhibit any other symptoms. She is hyper, loving, eats a lot, perky, and as smart as usual. Thank you for your advise on posting on different message board. Maybe I can find someone else there who can help out. I'll try to keep you guys posted. And do not worry--I do not neglect my baby and my husband and I take really good care of her...
Thanks again for all your help,
Sincerely, Olga : )
Thank you all

For Hypoglycemia, give your glider just a drop of Karo Syrup. This is what the vet told a friend of mine who's glider has it. It works fine now.

Too much or too little calcium can also cause seizures.

Greg Rich and Alex Cole in Metairie just outside of New Orleans - seemed to be pretty knowledgable to me. That is where you want to go with your glider if you can! Dr. Cole neutered my male and I was VERY pleased with him and his staff!!! GOOD LUCK!
