do you have Caroline macpherson's book on gliders? It has a section on hand-rearing an abandoned joey. In case you don't, I'll write what you should probably do. "Always warm the baby up before you attmpt to feed it." "Place the baby on a towel in a small glass or plastic aquarium and put the aquarium on top of a flat heating pad set on LOW. Check the bottom of the aquarium every few minutes for the first little while to make sure that it is not geting too hot. If the baby appears excessively cold, lethargic, and dehydrated, consult your veterinarian immediately. The baby's cances of survival might be improved by the subcutaneous administration of warmed fluids. Once the joey has warmed up, offer it warm (not hot) puppy Esbilac in a dental syringe or a 1cc syringe." you can usually get this stuff at a dog-and-cat vet, including the 1cc syringe. "Mix one scoop of Esbilac powder to three scoops of water. Initially, you can add Pedialyte (available in most drug stores) to the formula instead of water to expedite rehydration. DO NOT substitute Kitten Esbilac, goat's milk, cow's milk, or human milk replacer because they are all higher in lactose than puppy Esbilac and may cause diarrhea." you can also use special marsupial milk if you can find it. "Offer the warmed formula one small drop at a time by placing it on the baby's lips. do not try and force fformula into the baby's mouth or try and feed it while it is crying; the baby may inadvertently inhale the formula into its lungs and develop aspiration pneumonia." I will write the reat in a SHORTENED version: baby gliders do not pay attention to something for long, so if it had a few drops and loses interest, it is not full, try again in a few minutes. if the baby gets diarrhea, feed it only Pedialyte for every other "meal" until the feces are normal. Remember that soft stools are okay, but not liquid ones. If the baby has diarrhea for more than 24 hours, consult your veterinarian, and same if there is blood in its feces. until the joey has opened its eyes for a week you need to use a damp cotton swab and stroke between the cloaca and the tail to stimulate it to urinate and defecate. If the baby is a pinky, you need to place two tall glasses of warm water in the warmed aquarium on opposing corners with the joey and partially cover the aquarium with plastic wrap but leave enough air holes uncovered for "ventilation." Make sure that the glasses are tall and smooth enough so that the tiny joey does not climb up them and fall into the water. "Rewarm the water in the containers every couple of hours." If the joey is not "fully furred," feed it every 2 hrs. and if it is "fully furred" feed it every 3-4 hrs. on ce the joey's eyes are open you do not have to feed it at night. once it matures feed it pureed fruits and veggies and fruit juice. "Gradually increase its repertiore of foods until it is eating and adult diet." GOOD LUCK for you and your joey!
