IF you are using my version of the leadbeaters the repcal is already in the mix. so I would definitly have to say no on the addition of it. If you are modifying my version, it really depends on the modifications. We have seen a few case of this with people using my plan, but those peole were not feeding the fruits and veggies, or they have been dusting. So we do know that any large addition may be a serious problem. We can only go by the recipe itself as it is presented. any modifications in that affects other areas of the diet as well. For eample if the gliders are ONLY eating the fruits and veggies and mealworms, then obviously they will develope problems with a calcium and protein deficiency. as If they are ONLY eating the leadbeaters, they may develope problems from too much calcium. too much calcium is just as dangerous as not enough. The diets are a very complicated issue considering how little is really known, after all birds have been around for a very long time and they are still changing things there, look at the human issues as well. The more necropsys that are done the more we learn about gliders in captivity here in the states. What we are finding is far less gliders in general are dying due to dietary reasons. That is also helping. Please and I cannot stress this enough. Be very leary of trying to prevent calcium shortages by over supplimenting them.
I don't know about the cat problem, you obviosly have more experience than I in that area. What did your vet say, did he say there was a direct link in the cat fod and your cats?

Tigger, with gliders being so new we have to watch the things that are toxic to other animals, the same thing would go for things in their diets as well. The controversy about cat food, has been around a long time, however I do wish I would know more about the report that was done, I spoke with Caroline and others that SUPPLIMENT their diet with it, and they have the same questions as I do. which is.
1. What Brand were they using?
2. What was fed in conjunction with it?
3. How much was being offered?
4. How long had they been eating it?
5. How old were they?
Cynthia also told me her vet believes that it can also cause kidney failure.
but because the report was put out, even if only verbally, it was enough to cause doubt in my mind. My rules of thumb are
1. If in doubt DON'T
and
2. If something don't feel right it probably isn't. no one knows your gliders better than you. Follow your gut, avoid using something till you find out the facts behind it. Then decide.
I don't advocate the use of catfood; however there are others that do and have used it for years. But they have their own diet plans that they have worked around the nutritional issues.
There is a story on my realstories page about a young glider named Casper who was pulled from it's parents much too soon and was weaned onto catfood, you can read that story here.
<a href=http://www.angelfire.com/nb/sugarglider/realstories/Casper/casper.html>http://www.angelfire.com/nb/sugarglider/realstories/Casper/casper.html</a>
that little guy died very young of intentional blockage. We also see many gliders that have carry over problems from a past bad diet or that have problems from their parents diet. Once damage is done it is irrepairable, and sometimes even good diets can't prevent an early death. It all depends on the glider, the age how long it was on the diet, and the amount of damage that has already been done.
