Hi everyone. I'm not a regular here, but I have a question if anyone can help.

I'm a student wanting to fly home for Christmas. Can I take my gliders on the plane with me? What are the airline regulations for this, if anyone knows?

Thanks!

Leia,

I just flew to Lake Tahoe and took my babies with me. They did great and did not make a peep. I kept some grapes and cantelope with me and fed it to them regularly so they would not get to thirsty. They slept they whole way, altogether the flight was about four hours b/c I had two flights. The airline I flew on supposedly allows small animals. I flew on Delta. I think it costs $60 one way though. I did not pay it, I just carried them on board which is fine but I guess it would be bad if you got caught. But all in all mine did great and acted fine. They were sweeties.

It is illegal to sneak them on..so if you do get caught you get a heavty fine..and dependsing on the airlines policy and the state you are caught in they can take your gliders away from you permenatly.

I have looked up some previous posts dealing with this. You should read these so you can hear of other peoples advice and experience. Hope they help some.

Leia, when you go take your glider(s) where do you plan to keep them? do you have a cage there?

I spoke with several airlines about this and Delta is the only one that told me that I could take them on board. However, you cant just show up at the airport with them you have to reserve a spot on the plane because only so many animals are allowed to be carried on to the plane. I don't know how much it costs because the lady at Delta didn't mention anything about price. Northwest, and Southwest do not allow gliders. The woman at Continental told me to tell anyone who asked that it was a rare breed of hampster or any other small domesticated animal-she said she had gliders and brought them on the plane all the time.

Hello everyone.

I just wanted to tell you that I called Delta. The lady (after putting me on hold to look up gliders) told me that any "small, warm-blooded, household animal" is allowed on board. They have to be in a cage with a solid floor (not wire). Two or more gliders in one cage count as one animal, and it is $60 each way to transport them. Also, they need health certificates from a vet that are issued within 10 days previous to your flight (I assume they need separate certificates). Call early and let them know you are bringing your gliders because they only allow 2 animals (or kennels of animals) per flight, on a first-come first-serve basis.
This is a lot of trouble for our small, sweet animals, but it is safer for them than just sneaking them on. I would hate to get caught--but then my little girl is pretty grumpy when she doesn't get her way. As far as getting a cage to where I'm going, I will probably take one as checked baggage--no problem if empty.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Thats a good desicion...it would be awful to ever be caught senaking them on. 60 dollares isn't bad at all. I expected it would be a lot worse.

Good luck!
