I've had my baby for a week and she is not bonding with me. How can I give her all the playtime and attention she needs if she will not come to me? I'm worried for her because it seems that all she does is sleeps, even at night. My husband and I work graveyard shift so we're up all night and rarly see her out of her hiding box. She isn't eating a lot but we discovered that she LOVES grapes, baby apple juice and V8. I made some of the Leadbeaters mix for her and she won't even touch it. HELP! I want her to be happy and healthy but I don't know what to do!
please email any advice to me!

Hi. How old is your baby? Young babies sleep a lot. How musch does she eat every night?

Try putting you hand in the cage while she is asleep. Pet her and offer her lots of licky treats. When she is awake let her climb on your arms in the cage.

Here are some great bonding tips:

I'm not sure exactly how old she is. I 'saved' her from a pet store. The situation she was in was horrible frown. She had only been there for a day and let me hold her there but since we've been home she's more skittish. She drinks as much apple juice as I'll give her and she'll eat a grape or two a night plus a peice of peach or mango or some other fruit. I've tried to give her wax worms and meal worms but she doesn't touch those either.

Question - Is it possible for her to get sick from drinking too much? Just wondering.

Pet store gliders are not handled nearly enough. It can take years to gain the trust of one. Your bonding could take a very long time..but it will happen just go slowly. Just remember she was in a bad situation and she needs time to trust and love.

If she is not a baby and she sleeps a lot then it could be from a bad diet. Gliders need lots of calcium and protien. When they don't get enough a lot of times they will sleep a lot. Depressed gliders will sleep a lot also.

You may want to take a look at your diet..what do you feed?

I don't believe a glider can sick from drinking too much...but make it water..don't let her drink too much juice. Is all she eating fruit?

Take away the V-8. It is too spicey for her
little stomach. frown frown
If she won't eat leadbetters or mealies, then try the Gerber Chicken sticks in very small pieces to try to get some protien into her.
You might also try adding some applesauce to the leadbetters mix.
Please, please let us know how she does. Mary is right, you have got to get some protien into her as quickly as possible.
Don't give up on the bonding either, she will come around in time. Try hand feeding her every chance you get - even if it is only putting your hand inside the cage smile

Mary,
I just found my magnifying glass so I could read the ingredients on the side of the jar smile
You are right - it does list onion powder and garlic frown
HOWEVER, in my ignorance I have been feeding these for several years, and I must say that I wouldn't want my gliders any healthier wink
It doesn't say how much is used, but my guess would be a very very small amount.
This is also one of the ingredients in Bourbon's modified leadbetters.
I think we will have to leave it to the individual owner ... mine will continue to eat them, but perhaps I won't recommend them to others in the future smile

Gerber chicken sticks is not on the ingredients for bourbons leadbeaters...gerber baby food chicken is but it has no garlic or onion powder. From reading the information on the webpages about onions In think a small ammount over time can build up and cause problems but I am not sure.

Lucy seems to be doing a bit better. She's eating wax worms now. Uh, how many should I give her a day? She ate 3 yesterday and 5 today. I work at a pet store so it's pretty easy for me to get em, I just don't know how much she needs. What else can I feed her for calcium & protien? She's been eating yogurt off my fingers for the past couple of days. Are there any licy treats that are also good for them because she really seems to like it when she can sit on my arm and eat off my hand. In the cage only though, she's still too scared too come out. I have tried gerber baby chicken food. she doesn't touch it. I've also taken out the V8 splash (much to her dismay) and watered down the apple juice quite a bit. I'll keep posting updates on her and please please keep the advice coming. Thanks a bundle!

Well the leadbeaters is very importiant try adding something to it that she likes..maybe apple sauce. I feed about 4 mealworms a day...I think you could feed the same ammount of wax worms. Try getting her to eat the leadbeaters off your finger..it makes for a good licky treat.

With all due respects all...

Excuse me while I scream... KAREN ugghhh raspberry .. okay now that is done.. (see what hapens when you call me back raspberry )shall i bring back up that old post again? wink

okay Vanessa... the reason she isn't eating is because she is drinking all those juices, she is filling up on them, will she get sick from it.. YES, if she isn't eating what she needs, she will. start first as Karen said and shut down on the V-8, as Mary said and the apple juice.. offer her the leadbeaters, if she doesn't like it stir a tiny bit of the apple juice in it lightly, If she isn't getting the proper nutrition she may be getting ill, and we don't want that, a glider will eat just corn and drink juice if allowed to. But they need more..I also would suggest you offer her the wax worms in the morn.. at least until you get her eating properly. Good luck stay with us on this, if she doesn't eat the leadbeaters then let me know we have been working on a few healthy ideas

I've completely cut out the V8 and only give apple juice as a treat, even then i water it down quite a bit. she's eating the worms without a problem. loves them actually. have a feeling she would eat 20 of them in one night if i'd let her. smile Now the problem is her fruit intake has dropped too. frown frown . I'm getting discouraged. I tried using the leadbeaters as a licky treat but she wont even give it a chance. I will try doing the worms in the morning to see if it helps. tahnks for all your help! raspberry
