Yesterday, I was chatting with a wonderful breeder winkwho was giving me all kinds of idea's to entertain my gliders, and was curious if anyone else has tried a couple that I really liked.
The first had to do with tiny feeder goldfish. He said that his gliders loved to go fishing raspberry. He will place a med weighted cat bowl on the bottom of their cage with just enough water to allow the goldfish to swim around. That they went nuts dipping their hands in and trying to catch the fish. He recommended using the bright gold ones. Now one of my questions is, since we had that discussion about ca:ph ratio of fish, would these little gold fish, given on occasion, be ok???
The other idea was about crickets <cringes> raspberry. He recommended using toilet paper rolls, placing a crumpled white paper towel on one end as a plug; then adding a cricket or two within your plugged roll, and then placing another paper towel on the other end to plug it. His gliders go nuts ripping out the paper towel to find their cricket treat hidden inside. I thought this would be a cute way to keep the crickets from jumping out of the cage.
Does anyone else have glider games that they play ;)??

in fish it has a varied ca:ph ratios
from herring that is likee a 1:4 ? to tuna which is 1:15, now as far as the goldfish, the first thought that came to mind was the ammonia build up in the water from them, where other fish can not survive in the same water as they do.. (based on what I know which is little, very little). I am sure someone with more fish knowledge can explain this better. But i would really try the same concept but with something that you know is a healthy alternative.

Had not thought about the ammonia build up. I was just planning on leaving it in their cage during play time with fresh water, then removing it in the early morning.
This was just to be the occasional play toy for Gliders, not to be meant as a active part of their diet. Do you think that would be ok??
I just really try to help my gliders have the best time that they can, I know they can get bored easily, so every night I try to add a twist to their cages to keep them busy raspberry when it is time for me to get to bed (<laffin> 3 or 4 in the morning).
Do you have any ideas that you have used??
Thanks...!!

depending on where you buy the fish they could deffinitly be carrying bacteria...since they won't be cooked you have no way of getting rid of that bacteira. If you trust the petstore you get them from then it may be ok...but you ahve to trust the way they treat their fish.

I would be worried about leaving the water in the cage. if they are really well supervised then thats cool...but gliders can drown in very little water. So I would be careful.

my glider Stinker LOVES gold fish. this is how it works. the pet store has hundreds of gold fish in a big tank. Gold fish produce generally more ammonia. and a crowded tank of any fish will have high ammonia. so what you do is buy a few fish and put them in your tank at home (which should be fresh and clean) and doing that will instantly lower the ammonia. then when you are ready to put them in for the gliders put them in a clean bowl with new fresh water!(just enough for them to swim in though)end I would supervise this activity with the gliders. And it should be fine. just be aware the longer the fish are in the water the higher the amonia will become.

winkhave fun!

I've added desposible toys to the cages like
those huge costco size cream cheese boxes with a hole cut out one side.
and a cleaned 2 litter milk jug, with a variaty of holes cut out.
I have toy balls from the pet store in the bottom of every cage. (they like to catch them and chew on them for awhile.)

I'm always trying new stuff too I love to see their reactions!
I'll let you know it I come up with some really great stuff ;)

Michelle, I as Beck have genuine concern for the bowl of water in the cage for sure, a glider just died recently in less than 2 inches of water.. Eva/stefan, since i don't which one I am talking to,, If they do produce the ammonia, doesn't that mean that the substance is inside of them?

Thank you all so much for all of the info on the fishing idea smile. After hearing all of the info, I have decided not to use this idea, plus my hubby did not want me to even think about using "live bait" for my little guys raspberry.
I tend to agree with the thought that feeder fish are not "good enough" for my little fuzzy guys. Plus, the water is still an issue. Even though I would have just been using a small treat bowl that I would normally place nectar etc. in.
SSSSSssooooo this has left me again at peg one frown... What other glider games have you come up with??
My brother had thought that maybe I could get some of the squirrel mazes that they make to give squirrels a work out to get their food. Would that work for gliders too???
I have been hiding food in different areas in "their" room and they have loved to dash about and find all of their treat spots ;).
I am also in the process of making a "glider tree post" kinda like the cat trees that they make. It will have several different perches and toys hanging from it at different heights.
Let me know of any other ideas.....

Hey I just wanted to add about feeders! I work at a petstore and I know how goldfish are specially feeders! First of all they produce alot of waste which is what has the ammonia. But feeders normally dont get fead! They dont eat alot when they are in with alot of fish! Also feeders arent always healthy. They are just food for other fish other fish can handle bacteria in there food! But if you really want to use goldfish I would suggest looking them over making sure there tails are spread out not closed up and that they dont look pale or have white spots or rotting tails, if all that is good then I suggest let them sit in fresh water for atleast 20 mins! Dont feed them! Its the waste that has so much ammonia! I think they would be safe then! I would trust that for my gliders! But I really think the game of going fighing should be supervised closely!

Could you hang ropes across your celling from one end to the other? they love jumping from rope to rope...it looks a lot like tarzan!
