One night thier wet food is the leadbeaters, and the next night i mix glider nectar in with fat free yogurt. I alternate between the two.

Ok i will give you an example of their diet, tonight is vegetable night, so they will have some spinage,
some boiled carrots, and some zuchini, along with a few sunflower seeds, 2 crickets each and some
glider nectar mixed in with yogart. Tomorrow is fruit night, so they will have an assortment of fruit, 2
crickets each, and 2 tsp's of leadbeaters. Then the night after is vegetable night, same as the first
vegetable night. I switch on and off with the veggies and fruits because at first i would give them some
each night and they would only eat the fruit, so with the recomandation from a breeder i know, i decided
to do it this way, and it works out quite well for them. They are now eating their veggies as well as their
fruits.

Sounds a bit low on protien. The leadbeaters is meant to be an every day diet fed with daily insects and fruits and/or vegetables. I can understand switching fruit and vegetable nights to encourage them to eat their vegies, but I would use the leadbeaters every night. smile

Leadbeaters is the main diet and it should be given every night...yogurt is a treat as is nectar. Feed the leadbeaters every night and maybe once a night give them the yogurt and nectar as a treat. On that night you could feed smaller portions.

But where is the calcium coming from then? I was told that the calcium is a very big part of their diet.

the Nectar Lori is a fibrous combination of plants and nutrients
that do give them a major part of the nutritional needs.

The calcium is in the Leadbeaters. You add the Rep-cal in and the juice with yogurt and that pretty much covers what they need.
Fruit also does have calcium, but you much check the Phosphorous(sp?) level because if it is more than the calcuim level it cancels it out.
Some people(including me) have thier crickets "gutloaded" or fed a high calcium cricket food.
Keep in mind that too much calcium is also harmful to gliders. They can get calcium crystals in their bladder much like we can. And that can be painful and even fatal for a glider. There are other health problems with too much calcium as well.
Hope that helps you out. ;)

Ok thanks. I have a leadbeaters mix that does not have the baby food or yogart juice in it. My lead beaters mix has apple juice, wheat germ, egg with shell, honey, gerber baby cereal, and vitamins. So i dont see much calcium in that recipe, but they are 3 years old and new to us so i dont want to change their diet too much on them. These gliders are VERY healthy and happy gliders, and he has feed all of his gliders this diet with much sucess. They eat the nectar lori mixed with isomal baby formula (low iron), every other night, alternating with the lead beaters. Lead beaters has alot of honey in it which has fat in it so i was told NOT to give it to them every night for those reasons. I do think that when i change my leadbeaters recipe gradually to include the baby juice Yogurt i can change and give it to them every night and cut out the necar with the exception of treats.

Egg shells have calcium? My husband and i were just wondering why you put the egg shell into the mixture... we had no idea!

I thought you were feeding bourbons leadbeaters diet. Which has everything in it that they need...your leadbeaters does not.

The nectar is a treat, it has great things in it so its a healthy treat...but its not a diet..and mixing with yogurt just makes it even more of a treat...the two togetehr are no where near enough. Thats why you need ot feed the leadbetaers daily.

When you look at hoe much honey is in it overall..and how much they actually get each day it is not a lot. Gliders do need some fat. They busrn fat to create energy.

The ones of us that use a leadbeaters diet are normally speaking of Bourbons. I highly siggest using that diet.

You cant just change their diet after they have been on the same diet for 3 years, i will gradually change thier diet, but cannot do it so suddenly. Especially when she has the babys in pouch right now. But thank you for all the advice.

I did not know that they had been on it for three years..however there is no reason not to change it suddenly.....changing diets would actually be good for the babies..that diet is not enough for a normal glider much less one that is having babies and nursing.
