Ok I have read many times that Onions are not good for gliders, however I can not find this specific information anywhere. Where can I find the info on why it is harmful?

Thanks,
Mary smile

Onions are toxic for birds so it is safe to assume that they are toxic for gliders.

onions are hard for dogs and cats to digest, just pointing that out.

need I add, you have seen their tummy.. I would think that ANYTHING that may cause an intestional distress could be fatal to a gliders digestive system.. With Gliders being so very new, and so little being known regarding the different "QUIZZZEEN" that we have here. The first place to startis what is toxic to other animals.. much like the chocolates and dogs.. I myself would never chance my gliders lives on it.. Remember if in doubt...don't..

Alot of people do not know the effects that onions have on animals.....They are not hard on dogs and cats, they can actually be fatal depending on the animal....This also goes for anything that may have been cooked with onions, or onios that are dehydrated and then reconstituted into gravy etc. Even onion powder...Keeping this in mind and as little that is known about SG'S I would NOT allow them to have onion either raw or cooked in any way....Just my advice....

After searching my piles of info here... and finding the listed referring sites mostly 404's or new domains - The best I can do is to try to explain it myself - with other references.

Onions are believed by some to cause Heinz-body hemolytic anemia.

Anemia is any condition in which the number of red blood cells is decreased.
Red blood cells carry oxygen to the body's tissues and organs.
Hemolysis is the term used to describe the destruction of red blood cells - so hemolytic refers to something that causes the destruction of or destroys the red blood cells in the bloodstream.
Heinz-body is a term that describes the changes that occur to RBCs when the are exposed to oxidants - Including ingested onions. These changes, are irreversible...

The body reacts to effected RBCs by filtering them out of the system - unfortunately most often times, before they can be replaced in effecient numbers by the bone marrow's natural production of RBCs.

So far, Ive not found any references directly to "onions" other than my printouts.... But then, these are "people" related links and so the quantity/weight ratio is very far off when compared to a small animal.

ok, its about monkeys.. I know. But if you take the weight of a monkey against the weight of a glider...
I'd take this as a subtle warning.

And these links all refer to dog and cat research - but them again, take the gram weight against amount consumed.

Id like to make a point that BMLeadbeaters mix does not contain Stage 2 or up - which are the ones that contain the added flavorings. Gerber removed the added ingredients from Stage 1 after researching the possible complications - which is the product that was researched and added to the BMLeadbeaters mix.

Im still looking... and hopefully soon, Ill come across an animal study that is closer in comparison to a glider.

I haven't posted in just about forever... so hello to anyone who actually remembers me and my girls ( still have the three, two who were hand raised.. all healthy & happy! )

I had never heard about the onion problem and have given my gliders the frozen mixes of veggies from Meijers for a couple years now, at least one of which contains onions... never noticed a problem then again they probably only get this once a wk at the most and usually only a little piece or two of onion is in the mix... should I pick these out or be sure nto to purchase one that has onions at all?

I'd hate to think I was risking my girls lifes!

Thanks
