I recently adopted two sugar gliders from a woman who no longer had enough time to give them. When I got them, one of the gliders, Edgar, was rather fat. He's about twice the size of my other gliders.

I know that it is very unhealthy for gliders to be overweight. What health problems should I be looking for? What are the symptoms?

What diet should I put him on to help him slim down? He is in the same cage as my other gliders. Do I need to separate them while he is on a special diet?

Right now I am feeding them bourbon's leadbeaters mix, meal worms, fruits, veggies, rep cal, hardboiled egg whites, and boiled chicken breast (once or twice a week). Occassionally I feed non fat plain yogurt and fresh dried fruits. Is this diet balanced correctly? I just wanted to check and make sure that I was doing everything right.

Also, is it better to feed meal worms or crickets?

I would greatly appreciate any advice.

Thanks

Brittney

Hi Brittney smile

A lot of fat is not good for gliders, but as you switch his diet to a healthier one then the last owner fed, he should start to lose some weight. You shouldn't need to seperate him if you are feeding a good diet to all your sugar gliders. With the BMLeadbeaters you dont need to feed extra's like chicken and egg since they are already in the leadbeaters. You may want to avoid giving the chubby boy mealies because they are higher in fat. You can try feeding him crickets which are lower in fat (the other gliders can eat both mealies and crickets). You also dont need to give them rep-cal if you are feeding the BMleadbeaters because that already has 2 tsp of rep-cal in it which is more then enough. The non-fat yogurt and dried fruits are good low fat treats. Also to help your new glider lose some weight, you should let him get lots of exercise. Mayeb put a whodent wheel in his cage, and let him run around a glider-proof room. With a good diet and lots of exercise he should start losing weight and even look healthier. Good luck

Angie ;)
