If you use a bird cage for your gliders, please realize gliders can and have raised the doors on them and escaped.
Mine did this in their travel cage in a hotel room...fortunately right before my eyes. She walked up to the little door and put her shoulder against it...shoved it up, slipped right out. It could have been so much worse had I not been watching.
I hear alot about escaping gliders, maybe this small suggestion will lessen that occurrence.

Please use cable ties or thin wire to secure all doors on bird cages. If you have been using a bird cage for years, with no escapees, do this anyway. They may just discover it one day...one day too late.

That is what happened to me, and why i put my story on here. My little girl got out of her cage through a door. It is not a bird cage, but has doors on it for the food dishes to go in. She learned how to open those doors and get out when her food dishes were in place. Gadget was a smart cookie. That is how i lost her. We did put the food dishes away at night so that she couldnt get out through there at night, but the one night we forgot to do so, we will regret forever. Our little girl is dead. We now use ties as well as putting the dishes down at night, and i highly recomend that every one else do the same. frown

The best way to take care of that problem is to invest in the proper cage for your glider. A bird cage is NOT a good cage for sugar gliders for several reasons. Escape is one, but also the verticle barrs are hard on their feet, they cant grip the bars right so they slide down them and get burns on their feet! If you are using a bird cage I suggest watching your glider and what they do when they slide on the bars, if they then shake a paw you know it is hurting their feet.

Any cage which a glider learns to escape from is a death trap waiting to happen. If your glider has learned how to open the cage get rid of the cage or you will be getting rid of it when all your gliders are dead. They are small, flexible smart houdinis if we give them an inch they will take a mile. Please everyone listen and learn before we hear more stories of glider deaths.

Hmm thats scary, I have ties on my cages (even though I find them tough to open sometimes). I have never noticed my gliders shaking their feet, but I will definitely keep a wide open eye on that problem. I have 2, 5ft tall by 2ft tall square shaped bird cage with powder coated wire for my gliders. They seem to really love their cages and I have never had any injuries. Is there a different kind of cage thats better? I have seen nice cages on the internet but I really dislike ordering on the internet because of the Canadian American exchange.

Angie...are your bars vertical or horizontal?

I find it best just to make mny own cage....very few people actually sell cages that are good for gliders.

Mary/Beck

My cage has horizontal bars on 2 sides and verticle bars on the other 2 sides. I have watched them walk on the verticle sides with great ease, so maybe they are used to it. I still am worried though. I cant build my own cage because the only material I can find here is thin metal wire and I would never use that. Plus to add I seriously doubt I could build a cage, I would need a "cage bulding for dummies" book LOL.
