We just got home from a week In Las Vegas. Before we left I was running around like a chicken with its head chopped off putting name tags on all the cages, and writing extensive directions for feeding time. I have to say I was very nervouse about leaveing my 7 babies with a babysitter. but I knew in my heart that my friend would take good care of them. when we came home (it was 1:30 in the morning) all the babies were awake and playing thier hearts out. I was so happy. she did a wonderful job taking care of them! So I just wanted to say thank you to all the good glider-sitters out there. thank you thank you thank you!and thank you 7x from all my happy gliders! smile

I am happy your experience was so well, but my glider-sitter on the other hand, was terrible. I was going out of town for two weeks, like you said...wrote down all sorts of directions for feeding my two gliders, even gave the my book (caroline macpherson) for him to read, if he had any questions. The day after I left, he called me that my little boy glider was sick, really sick. So I told him take him to a vet right away, and I will pay you when I get back. Well, my little boy died. And when I got home, my girl acted like he hadn't fed her since I left. She still eats more hearty than before I left...My sitter was a friend too, and he wanted a pair of gliders. Now I am scared to go anywhere, because of my experience. frown

Well we have two totally different experiences with sitters.
It is so hard to feel confident that whoever you chose will take proper care of your babies. No matter who you chose, you must know that they will not certainly not give them the quality of care that you do.
It is especially hard when the caregiver is not a glider owner themselves. As we all know, it would be extremely rare to be able to find someone who also have gliders and is knowledgeable about their care.
The best option of course would be to take them with you, but this isn't always possible.
Both of you did what was best in your situation and thought you had provided the best care for your gliders in your absence.
Shannon, I am so sorry that your experience was as tragic as it turned out and I would imagine this has affected your friendship with this person. I am so sorry for your loss.

I have befriended three people in Tulsa who have gliders and one of which is another breeder like myself. I asked her if she wouldn't mind being available if I was out of town for emergencies and she said she would. I think through these boards, you might be able to find another glider owner to help you out to have a back up. This gave me a real since of peace while I was on vacation knowing that Anita was there for my babies.

i've called a sitting service to have them available if i ever take a vacation. they are paid professionals that have never seen a glider but i believe they are cabable of following instructions like take the food out in the morning and put it in at night and change the water and clean the bottom. after all they care for birds and lizards ect. and are insured and bonded. if i ever have to go anyway i'd trust them better than some of my family!!! they are a national petter sitters association. charge 25 a trip to the house for my 4 dogs and three gliders. considering the options i think that would be fair.

I realize I'm getting ahead of myself, but I can't seem to help being a worrier. Next September I am going to my husbands family reunion in another state for the weekend. Then in December, I'm going to my parents house for a week, again, in another state. I have only one glider, and even after just 4 days, we're very bonded. I am worried about finding someone to take care of him, but I'm also wondering, does being gone this length of time affect the bond that you share with your baby?????

it may not be the quality of the care by the sitters, but the bond and trust tyhat your glider has built in you. I know for a fact the best sitter in the world couldn't prevent my Baybe from going into her depression without me around. With the other gliders however there are things we do that do help the sitter out.
1. I move their pouch to the furtherest most corner away from the cage door.
2. I leave a nasty sinky Shirt in the cage for them.
3. their food and water is moved close to the door of the cage.
4. Their feed is broken down into daily portions in snack ziplock bags, or/and icecubes
5. The feeding times for the sitters are in the late afternoons, when they are heavy asleep.
6. NO playtime by the sitters.
7. We have an agreement with our vet, that if we are EVER out of town and one of our pets needs seen, there is no questioned asked, the bill is placed on my account till my return.

I would be happy to take care of your baby while you are away! I'm currently sitting for my biology teacher's glider over the break. I would have my own but my mother is not too excited about being a permanent home. Live in Fort Worth suburbs. raspberry

I am planning a trip to Minnesota in July and have been checking around for a good sitter. But I think I am just going to take all my pets with me ... 2 gliders (possibly 4) ... 3 dogs ... and 1 bird ... I just don't want to take a chance that something might happen if I am not with them or that they will not get good care ... Well look out mom ... we are ALL coming to visit raspberry
