My joeys were eaten by one of the parents. Is there a reason why and do I need to separate dad from mom when the joeys are born? Thanks

This usually happens for one of several reasons. One reason is it could be a first litter. Sometimes moms freak out and eat their first litter. Another reason is that something could have been wrong with the babies. Another reason could be a poor diet. Another reason could be that there is more than one female(colony situation) in the cage and the other female ate the baby. Which ones apply and we can help you to prevent this from happening again! Hope this helps!

Hamster Boy,
Some people have trios with two females and one male but I would consider it a major risk. I once had a trio (didn't know better) and lost joeys. Also I would never ever have more then one male with a female. The male who is not the father will most likely kill the joeys. Also the males may fight over the female. It is always best to keep sugar gliders in pairs if you are breeding. Make sure that the two together are a compatible couple and they should breed. And as for taking babies away from their mother, that is a very dangerous thing to do so I would wait until they are totally weaned until seperating the parents from the baby. Some people will pull joeys away from their parents to hand feed them (becuase they THINK it will make them tamer) but instead it causes many serious problems. The baby learns everything from its parents and without the parents it is helpless. Also the mothers natural milk is made for the baby and provides life-essential nutrients for the baby to grow properly. Hand feeding will often shorten the life of the baby because it wont get its essential nutrients.

This is my gliders second litter and they appear to be in good health. There are no other females in the colony...in fact it was just the mom and dad until the joeys were born. They just ate them. It blew my mind. Thanks. Jeff

Jeff

What diet are you using? I'm so sorry for your loss. Were the other joeys the parents had in good health? Sometimes diet can be the issue but it is likely that the joeys had some kind of health problem.

Well if its second litter can you think of any unusual stress issues that might have happened?

It could just be that they had a sick baby.

Or they may not be getting enough calcium or protien in their diet.

Please tell what diet you are feeding.

The only stress situation that had happened about a week or so before this happened is that the two other babies that were about 3+ months old were taken from the cage and taken to the pet store to be sold. Maybe they freaked out on missing their babies from before. We thought this would be safer for the joeys.
The diet we have been feeding them is fresh fruit, vegetables, glider pellets, glider booster and unspiced meats.

Htm ok thats not exactly a good glider diet...so diet is very likely here.

Please get your gliders ona good diet.

Here is a page of good diets:

This is the diet a lot of us use here:

Could I ask you why you sell your babies to a petstore?
