glider vapor,

Why are you afraid that your gliders will eat their babies? I know there are a lot of sad stories about babies being injured or cannabilized, but please dont worry about it, instead be prepared (have a joey emergency kit ready plus an emergency vet # so if a joey is rejected of injured you have a better chance). If you are feeding a good diet you should have nothing to worry about. During this tender time you should be feeding your female extra protein and calcium. When my girls are pregnant I give them about 5-15 large crickets and 2 mealworms. The leadbeaters has a lot of protein and calcium, so make sure she is eating it. I know what it is like to have the first time joey jitters, it's not fun. But I'm sure you will do great.

my little female is also pregnant (for the first time yeasterday i saw a tail sticking out of her pouch) and although i cant offer any reassurance for you..i can tell you I KNOW EXACTLY HOW YOU FEEL i have been compleatly paranoid about my girl eating the babies..especially cause this is her first litter and she is a young mommy (only just a year..maybye slightly under) all i can tell you is what ive been doing...feeding my little girl anything she wants to eat, (meat, crickets, veg, fruit, leadbeaters, mealies ect...) and waking up periodically through the night to check and make sure all is well in the glider corner. (as well as making sure i am prepared to do all i can in case the babies are rejected) i did not and definitally would not seperate your girl unless she is with a lot of other gliders,,and i would keep her with one boy glider so she isnt lonely...the less stress the better chance we both have....GOOD LUCK i am going through the same thing..glider vapor if you want to e-mail me and talk about this further...feel free.

I was so glad to see your posting. Kiwi is VERY pregnant too! I am SO nervous. I have a very large cage... should I be moving the pouches closer to the bottom if the baby falls out... I am going to be getting the emergency kit soon, and give her plenty of protein and calcium. Any advise would be SO appreciated!

Gliders eat their babies for reasons.

1. Diet
2. Stress
3.The glider is sick or injured
4. May be trying to keep the abby from beign eaten by others..in a colony situation.

The babies being eaten is pretty avoidable. If you have them on a good diet, they aren't ina trio or colony and they aren't stressed then it should be okay. Some gliders are born sick or with genetic problems..but this doesnt havppen very offten. Most cases are diet related.

Are you gliders on a good diet? Do they have any stress in their lives?

As far as will they like the new one..well its their baby so they should like it just fine...but as it gets older you will ahve to seperate it or get all the males neutered.

I posted about a week ago... Kiwi is/was very pregnant... well the new Joey - "Roo" is not out of the pouch, and doing very well. We had our first vet visit... and he said we are past abandonment and the "eating" factor- Kiwi has only one beautiful baby, so it has the luxury of all the milk, and the space in the pouch to fully mature, and then some! raspberry raspberry raspberry raspberry
