Hi

Any info that you would be able to share with me about Sugar Gliders would be a great help. In the recent months I’ve been reading up on them. I usually try and stay away from exotic animals. Since this seems more along the line of a fad pet. Through asking question with my brother who is Vet, he has dealt very little with them. Still he is on the case to find out info for me as well. I rather not talk to pet shop owners since they are set up to turn out pets rather then help.

I have come across conflicting stories about them. From what I’ve been reading they seem to be very social animals that need allot of attention actually no doubt about that fact. On the other hand their diet is somewhat like reptiles that I’ve raised which they can become calcium deficient. Would it be possible even though they are nocturnal to use a reptile light to help in vitamin D absorption for 1/2 hour daily? There is also the need to watch their balance of phosphors. Mainly looking for a site that explains a good diet that is thorough for the little buggers.

Most of the sites have owners who have taken care of Sugar Gliders up to five years. As stated on their site they can live up to 15 years. Still I don’t know the long-term effects of the feeding habits that they are giving their animals. It seems they do well with 40% fruit, 35% vegetables with 25% protein diet with calcium supplement.

Recently I ran into a bit of a conflict. I would prefer to keep reading up on them. It seems that the information is repetitive, and also mostly positive which is odd for an exotic pet. There is a neighbor hood pet shop that I have been going to for many years that provides run of the mill pets. He has a customer that has a Sugar Glider, which they find “boring”. They are ready to give it away. I rather have two from a reputable breeder though. As is I don‘t want the animal to die in the other persons care, the same in mine. Anyway I’m in no rush, just wish to find out any facts other owners have run into.

Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

This is a good diets page: <a href=http://www.angelfire.com/nb/sugarglider/diet/index.html>http://www.angelfire.com/nb/sugarglider/diet/index.html</a>

However after going there I see that it is down..which is terribly odd because I have never found it down before...I hope it gets back up very soon..its a very importiant page.

As for their downsides this is a good page here.
<a href=http://www.glider.buffnet.net/jane/glider/warning.html>http://www.glider.buffnet.net/jane/glider/warning.html</a>

Please do not be fooled. Almost every glider webpage has only their good sides. They deffinitly have some very bad asspects, and some have a hard time loving these pets. they are not for everyone.

Another thing you can do is go to www.sugarglider.net and read their archives. You really should see just how many varuois problems people have had with gliders. Also read the classifieds there. There are far more gliders for sell than there are people wanting to buy them. Most oqnwers sell the gliders within the first year of ownership.

My hardest part is finding a good glider vet. It can be very hard. You ahve your brother there so hopefull that won't be a problem for you.

good luck to you! smile

Try going here. On the left hand side of the index there is a diet link. This one is working while the link in the third column doesn't seem to be.

There are great links on this page. Some are down due to some technical difficulties that may or may not be fixed. Just sift through them. The bonding link is also great. You will have to click on all the different links to see what is working and what is not.

I've went through allot of links already. The ones you posted are some of the best pages I have found myself. It is a shame though many people are puting their Glider's up for sale. I can see a few people in this forum that are like I got a Glider now what. frown
