I dont know if its appropriate to put this on the boards but im just getting fed up with it.

teenagers-tweens, we will help you....we have to learn to trust you first. you cant say WE need to convince your parents when none of us know if your responsible or you just saw a cute picture on the computer and suddenly want one. None of us are going to say they are easy to care for. that would be lying. please, we will give you advice but YOU have to make a smart descision...not us

thank you....ive been dealing with this all week im sick of saying it over and over again.

i dont mean to be rude, i just want to give a straight forward answer

Wow, I'd have to say I'm very impressed with several of you guys. I'm 27 so I haven't been out of school too terribly long..lol..All the responsibility is rough and it's great to see that you all are being responsible and doing right buy your pets. You all get a big KUDOS from me!.

Thanks tisha!!

I just really beleive that being a teenager is no excuse for laziness, and definitly not an excuse for not taking care of your animals. And not only teenagers are capable of this, I know plenty of adults that still live off their parents and can hardly take care of their children.

That just makes my blood boil, I know when I'm 40 I will be taking care of my parents in any way that I can to show them how much I appreciate what they've done for me. Unlike most teens, my parents are my BEST friends!!!!

I'm seventeen and I am getting my first sugar glider in december, the little guy came ooP a few days ago :) (don't attack me either, i am looking for a friend for him as we speak)

I just want to say i don't think all teens are uncapable of being animal parent, or human parents for that matter. Not only have I trained horses from birth to show age many times, but I have started my own show cattle business in which I artificially inseminate my mama cows and nuture them through pregnancy often times having to physically pull the calves out come spring. I then battle six months with the cute little calves training them to mind, which if you've ever heard the statement BULLHEADED, its true. Let me tell ya!! i've been plowed over, slung up in the air, kicked, stepped on, you name it, and i've taken it. I started training colts and breeding and raising my own calves in jr high.

Then my freshman year of highschool I decided high school was way too easy and pretty much a joke so i was going to start going to college instead and earn my highschool credit that way. So my junior year I was a full time college student taking some highschool classes and I started working at a local subway 36 hours a week!!! I save a third of every pay check and provide for my self on whats left. I'm seven teen and i'm applying for the nursing program in a month and when I graduate I will be a registered nurse at the age of NINETEEN!!

My boyfriend and I are both total animal lovers!! and any animal we take on recieves impecable care. I bought everything for my little sugar glider before he even came OOP except for the food supplys which I want to get fresh before I bring him home. I have laminated charts of CA:PH ratios as well as a USB disk full of websites that have great information and the best prices on suggie stuff.

So i have faith that any teenager can take care of sugar gliders! its all on how their raised and if they are not allowed to be lazy their whole life then they will be geat glider parents.

OH and i've never relied on my parents for one dime to take care of MY animals. Even my $300/month grain bill for the livestock

I am thirteen and have owned gliders for 3 years and when I just had Sydney and need to get her a friend(sugar) I didn't come here and ask for you guys to convince them. I did that on my own. It took a few weeks of being "extra responcible" but I did it. I agree with everything you have said gutairgeek.

I'm 20 and have 5 gliders. Being in college and taking care of suggies can be very difficult and stressful at times, especially now that the economy is so horrible. I feel like I rescued my sugar gliders from a not so ideal situation and love them to death, but it is hard at times. I want younger people to know that sugar gliders are not "pocket pets". They are difficult and require a lot of time, patience, and money. I don't want teens to get suggies because they look cute and think that they are mature enough to take care of them appropriately. "Maturity" is not enough to make sure that gliders get everything they need and more.

i'm a teen and i have 1 glider (dont attack im getting his mom too he was caged with her before but she has a joey ip and i have to wait till it is old enough to be weened then i get her) too me he is pretty easy to take care of on weekends every few weeks i make his food and such but that only takes about a half an hour i usualy go to bed around 11 on weekdays so i let him come up to my room with me around nine and he runs all over me while im on my laptop, phone, doing homework ect and i take occasional breaks to just watch him and play too me its pretty easy plus on weekends how hard is it to carry them around in a pouch?

Oh oh i'll comment too, hehe since all the 'teens' seem to be doing it.
I'm 17 and I'm homeschooled. I own lots of pets, including a skunk, 2 dogs, 1 rabbit, and 4 suggies. (my brother owns 2 reptiles but I won't get into that). I understand that Gliders are not for everyone, and I also hope some of you realize that I am extremely experienced with exotic animals, so whenever someone sees one of my gliders, I make it known that they are not pets for young children. All my little cousins are like, oh i want one! And then I show them my scars telling them that they aren't always cute and cuddly. (not so cuddly at all!) lol. I love my 4 gliders to death, and spoil them rotten with attention and toys :D Although I do struggle with allergies sometimes, I am loyally devoted to my pets and wouldn't dump them ever in my life. Oh, and I also take in rescues here and there C: yay

I'll comment as a teen. I'm 18 and at the peak of the time gliders get abandoned. I go to community college a few days a week and I take care of my pregnant mother. I spend tent time with my gliders as well as supervised bedroom time every night. I go on other sites and try to discourage irresponsible people from purchasing gliders. I hate when people are acting like a glider is the same as another pet. If you cant decide between a glider and an iguana, they're not for you. I encourage people who do have the time and knowledge and I also rescue gliders when I can. I hope people read this post and reconsider they're options, if not, this is the place for help.

im glad we are getting more posts on this! i think its important. most kids i see get pets as cool "objects". the parents just humor them and buy more pets for them. it angers me, i watch these pets as a job and its just sad when i open a cage door to let it get some excercise and the animal looks at the open door with little intrest. People are lucky i dont work at a petstore, i have enough of a problem working at a vets and having kids and parents drop off rabbits and turtles saying "oh we dont have enough time, blah blah good home, blah" I see kids love a pet one week and want a new one the next. ughhh i wish i could speak out on this at a bigger level but what the heck can i do? i guess ill go back to lecturing at a vets office.

:] I'll do this post. I'm 15. I go to high school, come home do my homework, and the rest of the night was (and will be) spent with my glider(s).
Some days it IS hard to have a social life (as social as high school is)..lol.

To me, Sugar Gliders are not an easy pet. They take work and a lot of care. If you are not dedicated to spend ________ amount of time with them, then this pet is not for you because it is the glider that you are hurting. It is a pet that deserves a lot of consideration by everyone in your family.

I think this is a good post. I am 21 and working full time plus going to college and I will say that some days I don't get to spend as much time with my suggies as I should but they have a friend and I do spend as much time as I possibly can with them. I love them and I do not think my mom would have let me have them when I was living at home. Now that she has seen them and how you have to care for them I can say she definitely wouldn't want me to have them at her house.
snusie Posted - Apr 18 2009 : 03:30:28 AM
I want to add that in this forum, it's all about the gliders, and we want to be sure that anyone considering getting them is really capable of providing what they need. And it's usually pretty obvious after a few posts to know who has the maturity to care for gliders as opposed to "oh, cute, I want!".
lovely1inred Posted - Apr 18 2009 : 12:58:00 AM
I'd like to make a distinction as well. KittyKhat got on here with the story of her glider, and asked what to do better in the future. When she asked for help convincing her parents, it was to convince them she needed to get two, not just one. She already had had a glider, and had the go-ahead to continue to have a glider as a pet. She researched, found out she needed two, and needed to sell her parents to that fact. She did not post, "I really want sugar gliders you guys can help me tell my folks how good I will be." I think some new members read her posts and thought everyone would just jump on the convincing bandwagon, and it is not the same thing.

Thank you, Mary. You and Rheasha have always been exceptions to every rule when it comes to teens. So mature in everyway. Ive always been impressed with you.

Hopefully, the fact this post is coming from you will make a difference.

I, too, will butt out now - as I havent been a teen in many a moon.

This would be a great thread for teens so I just have ONE thing to say and then I'll butt out...

GuitarGeek01 is also a teen, so before getting defensive with her, she's one of you! If you want HONEST opinions about raising gliders while going to school, maybe working part-time or maybe wanting other social time, she could really be honest with you!
