I'm glad to see so many new members who are fellow horse lovers. I started riding horses when I was 10. I started training show horses when I was 12. I went to Oklahoma State University and was on the womens equestrian team from 02-04. Last year I had to sell my last horse. My parents didn't want to pay for his boarding anymore. I had him since he was 2 years old and I was 11-ish? (I am 25 now). We practically taught each other. I was heart broken to have to sell him.

I'm back in college now and can't have a horse yet. But as soon as I graduate, or move somewhere with land, (whichever comes first) I want to buy a paint.

This is a picture of my horse (the one I was talking about). His name is Sultan For Now. He is a registered Appaloosa. We were ranked 5th in the nation once in Hunt Seat Equitation. I miss him.

He was 11 years old in this picture I believe. I wish I had pics on my computer from our shows when we were younger.

Anyway, share your horse stories and pictures!!! Hannah has a BEAUTIFUL paint that I'd love to see more pictures of!!!!!

Ive never actually had a horse, i did start riding when i was 5 and took lessons for 11 years. I am very allergic to dust and dander and anything that comes with owning a horse so i never really thought about owning one unless i took heaps of benadryl day after day. I ride a neighbors horse every couple of days and before that, rode my aunts icelandic horse whenever i could. i cant say im the best rider but i really do love these guys, heres a recent picture.

TISHA!!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE that appoloosa
Where is he at I may have to go steel him
The bay is beautiful also, I love to jump, I started training roxy english when she was a year so I didn't have to extra weight of the western saddle. I love it!!
Sultan is such a thick beautiful boy, he looks like one of those horses that you could just lay on out in the yard for hours.
Love the pictures, we don't need quality to see how goergious those horses are.

Morgans mom: I agrees with you! When I was researching gliders and saw how everything threatened how hard they are to take care of I almost had to laugh a little. I understand that their diet requires alot of preparation. But with cows and horses you actually grow, cut, tetter, rake, bail, and stake every bail of hay they eat all year long. I beleive I did all that with 3000 bails of hay this year!! by the end of summer, I HATE HAY lol
Well I can hear cows mooing and horses winnying so I gotta go out too the barns now.

Hi, Im one of the new members who owns horses. We have a 6 yr old Morgan mare, Cardinal Brook Always Byzy {Faith}and a 3 yr old Morgan gelding, Orange Crush {Ozzy.} I've ridden and shown almost my whole life and now my oldest daughter[12] is doing the same. We were in OKC in October for the Morgan Grand National and World Championship Horse Show. A long way from Upstate New York where we live.Sadie did well, riding a horse she had shown only twice before-5th in the world in her age group. Sorry if I brag, just a very proud mom! Will try to post pictures.
When I started researching sugar gliders,a lot of posts warned about the work it takes to take care of them. It's true, but when you're used to feeding, watering, cleaning stalls and grooming 2 1200 lb horses every day, 365 days a year, I think its all relative! lol
My oldest and I have had a special relationship because we share the love of horses and spend a lot of time together at the barn and at shows for days on end. Now my middle daughter[10] and I are taking care of, and bonding with our new gliders together. In the 10 days we've had Dixie and Dexter, Chloe and I have spent some real "quality" time together researching and caring for our new kids. I love it. Watching her face last night when Dexter climbed on her head was priceless. Thanks to everyone for your advice and encouragement.

This picture is of the Thoroughbred "Lethal Lance" (the dark bay) and my App "Sultan".

Again, sorry for the poor quality...I'm literally taking a picture of a picture!! It's the best I can do right now!
tisha Posted - Nov 06 2009 : 02:14:12 PM
HAH!! That's funny. The 2 year old I talked about earlier "Snaz" had an incident once. It was one of his first ALL DAY horse shows. He was pooped and I could tell! Well, we were in one of our last classes of the day which was a rail work class, can't remember if we were English or Western...anyway, he went through the class just fine but when they finally called us in for the line up and we were walking to the center of the ring, he decided to LAY DOWN. Right there, in the middle of the ring! He just stopped and started to lay down! I jumped off and was of course REALLY worried. Turns out, he was just sleepy and was like "mom...I can't take anymore!"

Here, I took a picture OF a picture LOL This is "Zans' Rising Moon" AKA Snaz and myself...this picture is 7 years old!! He was 2 in it. Doesn't he just have BEAUTIFUL markings for an App?!?! I'm telling you, he was stunning.
filly47 Posted - Nov 06 2009 : 01:57:37 PM
Thanks tisha, he was my big ol' baby. I wish I had pictures of Bart. He was this 24 or 26 year old thoroughbred I was breaking back in(bay with few markings) who was super tall and super lean. He would try to kill anyone but his owner and I. The owner was pregnant and couldn't ride him, so I exercised him for her and fell in love with the big ol' beastie! He was also narcoleptic, which I found out at our first show. You should have seen me 'pounding' on his chest to wake him up before we went in!
swilt Posted - Nov 06 2009 : 12:58:04 PM
OMGosh tisha so do i haha when im not riding and watching im like i wanna be on!
tisha Posted - Nov 06 2009 : 10:31:26 AM
The AQHA World show is in town and begins today! Luckily a lot of the MAJOR horse shows are held right here in Oklahoma City so I still get to go out and get my horse fix. But man, it makes me really sad when I do go watch. I always want to be the one IN the ring with my horse, NOT the spectator! It's still fun though. I like to walk through the barns. I miss that smell! Hay, dust, shavings, horse hair, leather, and yes, horse poop! I love the barn smell.
Hannah2010 Posted - Nov 05 2009 : 12:19:36 PM
OFF TOPIC!! lol horses are used to heard cows I'd say were in the realm of our topic.
We need to start a farm animal post!! And a 'picture of every ones doggies' post. Because my little black lab is sitting here asking why i'm not showing her off.

But shhhhh..... don't tell her were getting a new indoor pet. She's always been the only child I bring inside lol (other than one day when I woke up and roxy (the white horse above^^^^^) was on the front porch and had her head in the sliding glass door, If i hadn't came down the steps at that moment she woulda been in the fridge for sure)

Filly, Chavez is so gorgeous!! I love Bays.
tisha Posted - Nov 05 2009 : 08:52:23 AM

I never got into the whole showing cows thing. My dad did buy two calves once that were 3 days old. I would get up throughout the night and bottle feed them. It was a lot of fun! We named them T-Bone and Porter. My dad THOUGHT he was going to have them butchered after we raised them. Boy was he wrong. There was no way my mom and I were going to let him kill those calves NOR would we eat them! They were too cute! My horse loved them too. He we stick his head in the corral and lick their faces. Anyway, my dad finally sold them once he learned that we weren't eating them!! (And yes, I did check and make sure we didn't suddenly get a lot of meat show up in our freezer!!!)

I couldn't tell you what kind of cows they were....they were the black n white ones!
Hannah2010 Posted - Nov 05 2009 : 06:27:05 AM
Thats crosby!! He's a cross between shorthorn, maine anjou, and chi I beleive. I've had too many, it's easy to get confused!!

Calves have got to be one of the cutest things ever!! I'm leaving for school but when I get back I will upload a baby picture. Crosby's older brother buffet had the most curly hair i've ever seen on a cow, he looked more like a lamb when he was born!!

Swilt: I have one mama, her name is layla, but she has the exact markings of a holstein!!! She's a beef cow, but It's like looking out at an extremely fat and thick milk cow, which I'm not sure that milk cows ever get fat. They seem to always be boney. I'd like to learn more about them
swilt Posted - Nov 04 2009 : 09:49:35 PM
I owned a holstein till he got big and mean than we ate him hehehe i know i felt horrible i didn't eat him everyone else did. theres a farm in DE i go to an help on occasion i love working with the babies! theres like 9 5-9 month olds
filly47 Posted - Nov 04 2009 : 09:31:54 PM
Beautiful. Is he an angus or angus cross?

Ayrshire are red and white dairy cattle. I also showed a jersey cow for one year that I 'rented' from my FFA teacher. Don't laugh but I also competed for Delaware Dairy Princess and came pretty close!
our2girlz Posted - Nov 04 2009 : 08:55:06 PM
You guys know so much more about this stuff than I do and I an the one from Hicksville, Iowa lol. No really I was born and raised a city girl, but have always found the beauty in horses. Now my son is fascinated with them gives me all the more reason to spend more time with them.

Filly47: What is an Ayshire Calf?
quote:
my uncle and grandfather had beef cattle and pigs

I raise and show crossbred cattle and I've taken numerous classes on everything beef cattle related. Unless its a dairy beed they must have forgotten about that breed.

I was watching animal planet one day in like fifth grade, I was an animal planet nerd. But there were these three little jersy calves on the ASPCA one day. A teenager had bought them when they were a day old and put them in the TRUNK OF HIS CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!! of course he forgot about them (no good, jerk!.....) and thats why they were on the rescue show. But i fell in love with those tan little faces and have wanted my own milk cow ever sence.

I will have to get a picture of "firgie" one of my momma's thats due in april!!! its her first calf and she already looks likes she about to explode, heres my show calf born on the farm last spring. He's turning out to be quite the handsom young man!!

filly47 Posted - Nov 04 2009 : 07:37:01 PM
This is so cool to see how may people are horse lovers! I was riding before I could walk and started showing when I was five. That was western, and we had an Impressive QH grandaughter, another quarter horse, a few paints (including one that was as big as a shire!), a shetland cross (I miss our little pony!), and an arabian over the next fifteen years or so. We used to breed paint horses and show a few of them. And no, we were not a 'mill breeding operation', we loved all of hour foals! When I was like 13 I started taking lessons in english and started showing english. I also had horseback riding in college! It was an awesome physical education class! I'll have to find some pics of Chavez, my trusty stead!

We also bred pigmy goats, my uncle and grandfather had beef cattle and pigs, and I showed dairy cattle for about three years. I had a beauitful little Ayshire calf named (dont' laugh I didn't name her she came with her name!) Fanny, who thought she was a horse. She was housed with the horses, and would actually buck and rear and beat them to the barn for feeding time!

Thank you....You know...they will let me go see him. But....I'm tearing up just talking about it. I don't think I can....I NEVER had a problem selling my horses. But, I always bought them KNOWING I was going to train them and sell them...He was different...I never wanted to sell him and never planned on it...I had him for....15 or 16 years????? I lost count to tell you the truth. So yeah, I haven't gone to see him because I'm afraid I'll break down. I just don't think I could do it...

Oh I am so jealous! I wanted a hourse so badly when I was younger. I rode western at camp every year and english for a few years at home. I LOVED it. I haven't been on a horse in YEARS.

Tisha I am so sorry about your beautiful baby. Can/do you still go see him?

I love clydesdales! I want one. If we could afford it we would so buy a farm. Allen wants to live on a farm so bad. We almost bought a horse of our own. Figured we could board it at his moms house, but the time wasn't right. We will someday our son loves them so much, but as you know he loves anything he can ride!
tisha Posted - Nov 03 2009 : 08:34:06 PM
Joy those are cute horses!! I want a mini...just to have one. Always wanted one! And Chris (boyfriend) wants a Clydesdale....even though he is scared of horses and will NEVER get on one! So one of these days we will have a mini, several normal size horses (preferably 16 hands!!), and a giant clydesdale! LOL
our2girlz Posted - Nov 03 2009 : 08:31:03 PM
I know he sure gets picked on by the bigger 2. He probally lets them get away with it, because that means extra special attention from the humans for him! I don't know his before story very well, but he was a rescue. He came from a home that didn't take care of him. No normal maintenance like brushing or taking care of his hoofs or anything. All they did was feed him. (Notice the figure lol) He is so ,uch happier now that he gets human contact. He's such a sweetie.

Oh yah, the 2 year old App that I bought from my trainer is "Zan's Rising Moon". We called him Snaz for short. He was the most BEAUTIFUL app I've ever seen. I have GOT to get some pics of him on this computer for you to see!! Seriously though, I think I'm gonna go to my parents this weekend and get all my photos finally!!!
tisha Posted - Nov 03 2009 : 08:27:11 PM
I have a ton of stories!! But no time to type them all LOL! My first 2 year old to break was, coincidentally, my trainers horse!! I bought him from her. He was the best first horse to break...He never once bucked or tried a thing. He was very gentle and quiet. I used to take him along to Sultans horse shows, just for the experience. Then, his very first show, he was the 2 year old western pleasure futurity champion! (I did all around with all my horses, english and western). When he turned 5 I started him on jumps. I sold him at 6 years old to a family that bought him for their daughter. He was her very first horse and they were the perfect match. I was so happy that they found each other and I helped, you know??

I was also given an ex-race horse. He was....4??? I think?? When I got him. My parents surprised me with him. At the time, I was doing more breed shows with Sultan and working towards Nationals. But I also wanted to do the taller jumps (I only did Hunter Hack on Sully). So I was given this BEAUTIFUL thoroughbred named Lethal Lance. He wasn't good on the track so they wanted him to have a good home. Unfortunately, we learned that he had a bowed tendon, so he couldn't jump.

So yah...I have tons of stories! I bet you do to! If I am ever around Ohio, you better invite me to your farm!!!

Our2girls!! what cute costumes, I love it. A great Idea.

The paint is beautiful, but i'm a sucker for chrome
Minis are so cute, but man they can get a bad case of little mans sydrom
Hannah2010 Posted - Nov 03 2009 : 08:17:31 PM
Yep!!! I'm in ohio, and I'm not sure that I like it getting cold here already :(

I must say if you ever get a chance to train them from day one DO IT!!!

It is the most rewarding feeling ever. For the first two weeks I hardly left her side. I acted like a complete barbarian around her to get her used to every possible thing. The soak so much in in those first few hours, days, and months. It was completely worth my every minute. She loved learning, it was easy for her too. All she wanted was a pat on the shoulder and a "good girl" and she would do ANYTHING for me.

She will be three and a half on christmass and let me tell you she is a 9.9999999 on the bombproof scale!! Our farm is a concert venure durring the summer months. And of course when people see the horses they are completely attracted to them. I had a lady come up the me in the middle of a concert and sling her baby on roxy's back. Roxy was only a year old at the time!!! She didn't have a halter on or nothing, she was loose in the out door arena. I was shocked that this mother didn't even ask. I mean this was a BABY, maybe two years old. Of course roxy didn't move she kinds looked at me like, "are other people aloud on my back other than you mom?"
I just love her, she's here for life thats for sure.

i'd love to here stories about some of the horses you trained.
And i wan't to see some other members pictures!!!
