I've been getting a lot of help on my suggies eating habits ( especially from Leela she's a freakin' GENIUS ) But just so I know and I'm not in a sudden pinch, What if my suggie refuses to eat some important foods that are vital to his well-being?

How would I help him in order to make sure he is safe?

Don't worry about it! Tonight I just gave him some cut up banana (I wouldn't know how to spell that if it weren't for Gwen Stafany), Chopped up baby carrots, peas, and cut grapes.

I left him with my dad when my family wanted to take me kayaking for the day at the spring near uhh.. lakeland? I think? So I obviously couldn't take him. I get back and his water bottle feeder thing fell down so he couldn't drink and I was FURIOUS. I WAS GONE ALL WEEKEND AND MY BABY DIDN'T DRINK FOR OVER A DAY?! But, I got him out of his cage and held the feeder to him and he drank quite a bit for one sitting.

Needless to say I need to find somewhere else to put him.

I don't use those but I do buy publix pre cut up fruit cups, no juice in them though... it's all fresh.

Hey what about Dole fruit bowls? I know they say no canned stuff but, these say 100% fruit and no added sugar so is it safe?

it is adorable and it is normal

If you look at my glider from below his top little teeth poke out a bit. Is that normal? I hope so because it's so damn cute
Leela Posted - Aug 06 2016 : 07:33:33 PM
Awesome that he let you take a look their teeth are fascinating ! I believe they have 40 teeth packed in those tiny little jaws. These teeth are pretty "normal" Notice the dark pink on the gums on either side of the longest teeth, that is normal/healthy. If you see any black spots or swelling that is NOT normal.

The second picture with the tongue hanging out, that glider either has a broken or missing tooth and or some dental issues. Gliders only stick out their tongue if 1 the tongue touches the teeth and causes pain or 2 the glider has a missing or broken tooth. These are just some common things to look for when evaluating teeth.
Abscesses can be visible and invisible. The gliders eye may swell shut from an abscess. Or teeth will shift and have a very large gap on the long front teeth. That is a sign there is an abscess below the teeth or the gliders jaw may have been broken at some point and not healed correctly, only a vet can tell you for sure.

Okie dokie great! I tried the tent test anyway on my suggie and he's fine. The other day when he first started waking up he laid on my chest and let me pet his cheeks, chin and he even let me check out his teeth and open his mouth without a bat of an eye!

Orange Gatorade mixed 50/50 with water, yes it's what we use for dehydration a lot. NOT Powerade or other similar products, just oragang Gatorade. We also use Pedialyte sometimes mixed 50 50 as well.

Re hydrating them is important to keep the internal organs working, being dehydrated for to long the organs will start shutting down. Once the internal organs start shutting down, the glider goes down hill very quickly.

I've heard that slight dehydration can be fixed with some gatoraid mixed in the water. Is that even safe?
Leela Posted - Aug 05 2016 : 10:32:14 PM
There is so much we don't know about them, even vets are still learning how to treat them for certain things. My mentor has owned gliders for more than 20 yrs and probably knows more about them medically than even my vet knows.

some of the most common things we see are abscesses, broken tails, ripped out nails, toes strangled by strings . Liver issues almost always come up on necropsy reports, but what caused the liver issue is rarely known or verified.

One thing to keep in mind is dehydration, dehydration is a symptom of something else usually, to fix it you need to fix the problem not just the symptom. Same with constipation, it's a symptom as well. Uti's happen but they don't seem to be quite as common as they once were, but can still be difficult to get rid of.

Same here. All I did was memorize symptoms a few of the most common health/organ issues with these guys
Leela Posted - Aug 05 2016 : 10:15:05 PM
that I'm not sure, good question for a vet though. I'm still learning medical issues, some I'm more experienced with than others... internal organs not so much yet.
Fluffbuttsmomma Posted - Aug 05 2016 : 09:36:56 PM
Can the liver issues lean to a UTI?
Leela Posted - Aug 05 2016 : 07:10:19 PM
I'm not one to push for a cage mate, some single gliders do just fine on their own. Just tellin ya from my experience adding a cage mate can help. Having said that I have a single intact male who is about 6 months old and he almost cleans his plate.

There is nothing wrong with trying different safe fruits and veg, however once you get him on a specific diet like bml or one of the other ones they each may have fruits and veg that you absolutely need to feed with it. but for right now, your doing fine.

I wouldn't ad orange juice to anything your doing now. Yes it does have some calcium and vit a minerals but, it also has very high vit C which inhibits the body from managing iron, harder on the liver. There is more technical stuff about it but I can't seem to word it properly... liver issues are pretty common with gliders alot are believed to be in direct line of Iron and how the liver processes it.

Thank you sweetie! I really want him to have a cage mate but until I can financially care for two, I try to keep his pouch on me almost constantly to keep him from getting lonely. He is slightly balded, most likely from the stress of moving so I'm not all too worried.

I'm trying to get every healthy fruit or veggie that is safe for suggies on his plate at least once so that I can figure out what to make into treats, Meal ideas, etc... so that he'll eat.

I've made small chunks of peeled carrots a treat. In the mornings sometimes I give him a bit of oil free scrambled eggs, cherries (yes I get rid of the pit), sweet peas, and sometimes a itty titty bit of watermelon. Really small portions but lots of variety.

I know you said we shouldn't subject them to experiments but I want to know what I should & shouldn't buy. Every single fruit & veggie that is suggie safe I have written down the nutritional facts as well as notes to when too much is too much and too little isn't enough.

I'm having a hard time finding 100% orange juice though to add to his yogurt drops that I might make later for him to get some calcium...idk... I'm working on it.
Leela Posted - Aug 05 2016 : 05:37:24 PM
having said all that, if the glider just won't eat the staple even after a couple weeks then you might want to look at a different staple and I can certainly give you some other options
Leela Posted - Aug 05 2016 : 05:30:24 PM
I'm no genius and still learning new things myself I'm gonna tell you about some things to keep in mind when stressing over gliders not eating what you want them to eat.

we discussed already how and when to feed, but other things can affect their eating habits as well. The moon phase, barometric pressure changes , females in heat, not measuring out the food as I mentioned before, and some times they just don't eat good for a night or two.

I used to stress over it a lot, but now I can tell it's not just one cage not eating great that night, all 3 of my cages don't eat great on the same nights. After a couple nights of that they go back to eating good again.

Your guy is a single which I think also plays a part in their lack of appetite sometimes. My first girl Leela, didn't eat to great until 1 I figured out wth I was doing wrong and 2 she got a cage mate.

Having two gliders does tend to get them eating better, in my opinion. But as I said above, other things can play a part too, and sometimes they just don't like what you are offering them lol picky picky

You can also pick up a kitchen scale, and keep track of what he weighs. Weights will vary but if an adult is 55 grams or under that is a dangerous weight and he or she would need to go see a vet pronto. Anything above that is okish, most aldult ( 2 yrs or older) run about 100+ grams though some maybe less
