So I've had my twin boys for about 6 weeks now and I thought that since they are now 7 mths OOP and I could see their scrotal sac that they've already reached sexual maturity. Boy was I wrong! Yesterday I noticed that their sacs were huge and they stink even worse than usual. My husband took a look and of course was strutting around the house going "that's my boys" lol cuz he noticed it too. They've been finicky about food and I've been trying different f/v to see what they like but since they were on pellets,HPS mixed with just water, and a frozen cherry berry blend at the breeders they have been transitioning to the Critter love diet slowly. Last night it was like having 2 teenage boys in the house though and they picked their bowls clean after eating a few metalworms and then ate all the pellets I leave just in case. I was shocked that they ate so much after just picking. They ate carrots, peas, green beans watermelon, mango, and scrambled eggs. Has anyone had this happen upon their boys hitting puberty? I gave them the same dinner minus the eggs tonight and added their HPS mix instead for see if it happens again. So glad they're scheduled for their neutered on Friday since they've also been wrestling more this week and I'm worried they're getting ready to brawl. Would love to hear thoughts..... |

ahh right on if you sew you can make a OE pouch if you need it  I sew the basics for mine and a friend of mine is a sewing vendor so if it's something I don't feel like making I ask her for it ( usually bonding bags lol I hate making those the last one i made I screwed up the zipper and I still have to rip it apart and resew it
This is one style of OE pouch, they are great for pouch protective gliders and gliders with e collars on.
I'm at my limit right now with the 3 cages, we live in a 5th wheel trailer sooo I'm out of space for another full size cage. But I still have room for 2 more gliders in one of the cages if something comes up I've got 3 standard greys, 2 plats a mo a min mo, a leu and 2 caramels. I've lost 3 greys and a white face this year. No other pets, I'm to lazy to walk a dog everyday and totally with ya on cats lol
I don't work out of the house, I do pyrography and sell online. So I'm usually on here a few times a day. I don't typically post an awful lot anymore, I usually just post on medical issues if I can help in anyway. I did a lot of work with rehoming gliders and rescue for a while so I have connections all over the place and I hosted a glider gathering here for the last two years. So I've been very active in the community up until the last few months, then I took a step back from it all. So yeh I'm usually around if you wanna chat

My hubby loves them but he really does think I'm obsessed lol! I lucked out with these guys and in 6 weeks have been crabbed at by each glider only once. They didn't even crab at the vet today during the exam. They are the sweetest so naturally I want more by the same breeder. She sent me a pic of the most beautiful mosaic last night and I begged for her! We have platinum mosaics so I really want a regular colored one now! I will wear him down! He said when we win the lottery I can have a whole glider wing built and a colony of 100 if I want and we will also have an aviary for our Macaw and African Grey and many other birds. Boy is he going to be shocked when we win and I start a rescue! And oh the fleece..... it's everywhere in my house. I can't stop buying it (well it's spring so it's on sale everywhere). I love sewing stuff for them. I'm hoping I won't need the collars but will make them anyway just to have on hand. Already have Neosporin origInal and the silos are a great idea, thank you ! Any time you want to talk gliders I would love to! He thinks my obsession will run its course but it's only getting worse. Now I get why some people have so many cats. Not my personal favorite animal but I totally get it. Oh and we also have a dog.... |

glad it went well, lazer pom off is my preferred method, they heal up quicker with less complications. I went 2 hours away to have lazer done instead of a half hour away to have pom on traditional done on the last two boys I got lol.
N yeh no experimental surgery on my babies either lol neuters can go horribly wrong even with experienced vets, there was a glider last year that suffered severe burns from a neuter gone wrong and it was a office I used once for neuters a few months before, not sure if it was the same vet or not but I certainly didn't take my next boys there to have theirs done. I know it was a freak accident but I also didn't like how the office handled the situation.
Mossssst of the time neuters are performed without a hitch but I'm one of those if it could happen to only 1 in 10,000 it will happen to me kind of people lol.
Don't worry and fret to much, the gliders will pick up on your anxiety and be more anxious themselves, the biggest thing is knowing what to do if they bother the neuter site.
IF one of them bother the neuter site you will need to make an e collar if the vet didn't provide one.

IF an e collar is necessary because of open wound I would also separate them until the glider is healed to prevent the other glider from making the wound worse.
Getting the e collar on is a royal PAIN. Put the glider on countertop or table that they won't have any traction on, kind of gently hold the glider down with one hand and slip the e collar on with the other and tape it in place. Once it's on you want to use your finger tips to gently pull the neck skin forward, this will help to keep the ecollar on. If the glider is crabbing ( and he will be ) let him try to get it off, if he still has it on after about 10 minutes it's on tight enough, if he gets it right off, make it tighter.
After care (with e collar on ) we typically suggest open environment pouches for gliders with e collars. You may not have one yet, so just make sure the glider can get in a pouch with the e collar on.
We use bird water silo's for food and water when a glider is in an e collar, this allows them access to food and water on their own( the trough fits in the cone ) without you having to hand feed. They are awesomeeeeee and easier to clean than most silo's in pet stores, and you get 4 for less than the price of one petstore one, but in a pinch pet store ones would be fine.
Since your feeding CL you'd just put his portion in the silo and fruits n veg in a shallow dish or even plastic lid.
You can use neosporin on the wound, just make sure it is the original formula NO PAIN RELIEF.
We also use Vetericyn VF ( I prefer this )
Lastly, if something goes sideways... don't panic, the calmer you are the calmer the glider will be.
Hopefully you won't need any of this info, but if you do now at least you are prepared so there is nothing to stress over.
lol at shutting it hubs, my boyfriend loves ours too all 10 of em despite me only supposed to be getting 2 he baby talks to them, gives them treats every morning n helps me feed at night.
He gripes about and all the crap I've accumulated for them LOL2 yrs ago I filled his motorcycle trailer full of glider stuff and the mountains of fleece I had omgggggg lol he got over it all and does absolutely anything they need with no complaint.
But he especially loves when i call him at work freaking out He never misses work even if he is deathly ill......but boy will he leave early if I call about the gliders no matter what it is.

Leela you've been so helpful answering and I really appreciate it! Their neutering went well (laser, pom off) and they are sleeping off the the day comfortably at home. Chip did go at the incision site as soon as he woke after surgery so they put him back under and numbed it more and put a bitter apple solution on it that he seems to hate so far. Dale could care less but is making sure to groom all of the icky vet smell off his face and legs etc. I know it's going to be a long night cuz I'm sleeping next to their cage in the liv. rm. Tonight so I can make sure they're ok. I'm still super nervous but I have a wonderful exotic vet in NH that made me so much more comfortable today. Unfortunately he is 80 miles away but I used him for 20 yrs before I moved to MA and most of the so called exotic vets I called around here have never done a glider neutered. They said I was welcome to bring them in but seriously who wants to have their babies be the guinea pigs (lol). They should stick to those and hampsters cuz they're not touching my babies. Any advice is always appreciated. I like how you said to take a breath cuz I think we all start to spin out sometimes. My husband thinks I'm obsessed. I think I just love them and maybe my animals are filling the empty nest my kids have left. Either way he's totally in love with them too so he should shut it or prepare for another face hug! |

Lol your doing great n I know what ya mean. I worked with a well known glider person on medical issues for a while, I learned and know soooooooo much but when it comes to my own gliders...well all that knowledge goes out the window sometimes cause it's now one of my babies and not someone else's.
We tend to over complicate even the most basic things with gliders, so when your head starts spinning stop, breathe, and bring it back down to the common sense level.
Gotcha on the food, yeh most gliders won't touch bananas, strawberries, kiwi,raspberries basically anything with tiny seeds. There are some gliders that eat them but none of mine will ( I have 10) which for me isn't a big deal some of those foods are high in oxalates so I wouldn't feed them often anyways.
The fresh vs frozen carrots, lol my first glider was like that she wouldn't eat frozen fruits or veg for the longest time, she out grew that. And the 10 I have now won't touch a raw carrot it either has to be boiled or steamed or frozen(blanched).
Presentation can also play a part in if they eat it or not. Some gliders like their food all mixed together, some like the food separated, some like big chunks some prefer small diced, some like their food distributed around the cage so they can forage etc....
Mine like their food separated on the plate, small diced. Sometimes they like to forage so I'll hang the fruit or something around the cage once in a while. But, I also think it's partially or maybe even mostly because that's how I started doing the food when I had more than 2 gliders, it's part of the routine I made and they got used to. i Prefer the diced because they can grab it off the plate and take it somewhere else to eat leaving the rest on the plate for the others in the cage. So now if I'm being lazy and put a chunk of food on their plate instead of dicing it they are like WTF MOM
Anyway, don't stress to hard about it, you will figure out what works for you and yours. Good luck on the neuters !!

Thank you for the advice. I split the food between 2 dishes just to prevent any kind of problem. Dale will actually sit in the dish so Chip can't get any and it causes a bunch of hissing etc. They really haven't had a total brawl but I just get a strange sense that it's coming soon. I used to work for a zoo for several years so I have a good idea about animal behavior. It's almost like babysitting or working at a daycare vs having your own kids it seems. I thought I new a lot but having my own gliders is like being a new mom and I was so nervous the first 2 weeks and didn't feel like I knew anything all of a sudden Lol... The tip about portions makes sense and I'm putting together a couple of salads from the Critter love diets. I just wanted to get some idea of what they liked 1st. They won't eat strawberries or anything that even touches a strawberry for instance or red raspberries but they will pick around those so I can probably hide them mixed in. They will eat fresh carrots but won't touch the frozen ones, so I have some idea which salads to try. We see the vet for neutering tomorrow so I will see what they weigh and check their phosphate/calcium levels hopefully too. Thanks again for the advice! |

they probably did hit sexual maturity a long time ago, usually no later than 4 months old.
The low hang,for lack of a better term lol, is not an indication of sexual maturity. Their balls don't "drop" they are born already in place. The first indication of sexual maturity in males is developing the bald spot on the head.
The low hang isn't anything to worry about though in a day or two it will look normal again.
Young joeys don't typically eat a lot of fruits and veg until they hit about 6 to 8 months old, so their eating habits until now aren't unusual and it isn't unusual that they are starting to eat a more rounded range of foods now at 7 months.
If your feeding critter love, they should be getting one of the critter love salads with it rather than random fruits n veg. There are several salads to choose from on the critter love website.
Also, a lot of things can affect how much or little they eat. I have to be careful when making their plates, I tend to be a little generous with the food portions.... the problem with that is if you over feed they actually eat less. So when I notice my guys aren't eating great I have to measure out the portions to scale it back to what I should be feeding.
I also have to use 2 plates in one of my cages. My plates are small, so trying to feed 5 gliders on one plate...the plate is mounding and a bit overwhelming for the gliders, so I split it up. The moon phase, weather, females in heat, temperature in the environment, season, etc can affect how much they eat.
It sounds like they are starting to establish the dominant role if they are "wrestling", are they balling up? or just bickering?
If it's not balling up, they are working out their roles. They will continue to do so until the roles are established. This doesn't just happen with males, females do it as well, any time I change colony combinations ( add or remove gliders from an established colony ) the roles of each glider can change and the new colony has to redefine each role and job of each glider in the colony. It can take as little as a couple days, to a few weeks to sort it all out.
In your case you don't have an adult dominant glider to fall in line under, so the boys are deciding who that is going to be.
If the gliders are balling up and legit fighting, there could be something else going on.
