I was considering hanging a deer antler in my sugar gliders cage as a toy and also as a mineral suppliment. I know in the wild that shed antlers are eaten by mice, squirrels, etc. because they are good source of calcium. I was yhinking od drilling a hole in the antler and hankging inside their cage. I just wanted to get others thoughts on this and see if anyone else has done this.

huh. idk about this personally but that seems like an interesting idea? :?

i looked it up quickly and found that flying squirrels use deer antlers for a calcium supplement, but it also stated on the page NOT to feed any flying squirrel food to sugar gliders because they have completely different nutritional needs.

what kind of food are you feeding your gliders at the moment? the staple diet should already have enough calcium for them to prevent any lack of minerals, which would nix the need for another supplement.

if you just want something for them to chew on, i myself got a kong toy for ferrets & let them have at it. it's a fun foraging toy, and safe for them to chew on, as even many dogs can't destroy it.

As long as it's sterilized it should be ok (baked in the oven perhaps?) I don't know if antlers or deer harbour any dangerous bacteria suggies might be harmed by?

I would also worry about it soaking up waste scents much like wood would. It could become a source of stinkiness in short order if it's porous enough to retain odor. You'd probably have to clean it with vinegar water to cut smells, but even still it might not stay usable long. I have to replace my lilac branches every 2 months once they saturate.

Otherwise, it's a neat idea! I really like natural items in glider cages.
