Where do you guys get your fly pupae from?

If anyone can offer info. on other insects you feed and where you purchase I would appreciate it.

I just ordered 3000 mealies from Camille (sp?) so I'm good their, but a good place for crickets, grasshoppers, or any other insects would be great. I'm sure some may feed things I've never considered.

Thanks!

Fly Pupa: www.oregonfeederinsects.com/
Silkworms, Waxworms, Butterworms, Pheonix Worms: www.mulberryfarms.com/

Supposedly waxworms can be reared to moths for a nice flying treat too.

Thank you Vicious,...I did stumble upon Mulberry Farms. Looks good....I remember awhile back someone posted a video of their glider playing with the silk....you probably recall it.....and I like how they say silkworms are a lower fat option to mealies.

What about flightless fruit flies?

I'm gonna try to transition their diet to Spring since they aren't eating what I'm feeding anyway.... more bugs & foliage.

I, too, am having difficulty in trying to offer them a variety of feeder insects...So far, all I have are crickets. I'm going to end up having a bug farm in my room... that's not really going to fly with my family members

Ah! I didn't look at this thread, because it is titled "Fly Pupae" and I thought it was something specifically referencing LGRS, which I don't feed.

Here are some of my "bug links." I haven't ordered from many of them - so this is NOT a recommendation. Only a collection of links!

Also, I've recently ordered from a guy called "SoCal Roaches" on FaceBook. I ordered Giant mealworms for him - and they came in as large as the Superworms I get from the pet store. These were truly GIANT!! The gliders were thrilled.

Also, Mid West Feeders, on FaceBook. I'm not sure exactly which bugs he has ... I ordered dubia roaches from him, and was pleased.

My gliders actually turned their noses up at silk worms but I want to try silk moths only thing is they are notoriously hard to rear. I should add that both of my links are places I have ordered from and would recommend. Since I live in a hot area Mulberry Farms made sure to ship when the weather forecast was not at baking temperatures and Camilla included a cold pack when I ordered and the heat was at 102 Degrees F and they lived!

I would not recommend fruit flies as a live feeder because they are so small that the gliders ignore them or don't even notice them. I suppose you could add them to a diet but if they are live it might be hard to just kill em, they have these huge eyes and they can't fly away so they try and run, its really pathetic.

YUCK! Thanks Vicious...I'm hunting at the moment and was discovering exactly what you're saying....they are so small I wondered how I would feed them. Thinking I'll pass on those.

Also, I'm having a hard time finding "crickets." I'm looking for the little green/brown ones such as the kind they sell at PetSmart but all I'm finding is the black, ugly "crickets."

Can anyone guide me in a direction?

Thank you for this list! I needed to order a bigger variety of bugs for Monty the Dwarf Mongoose and this came in handy. Let's just hope the boyfriend doesn't see how much I just spent on bugs!

Awww. Heck - I didn't even include some of my roach links, because I didn't want to gross too many people out!

Glad you found it helpful!

Hahahah, Alden do you have any convincing sources that exclaim how feeding roaches may be....a good idea?

JazzNZoeysmom, do you mean like Grasshoppers? I know grasshoppers are green I have been looking for live ones like crazy on the internet and everywhere says they sell them at petco/petsmart but I just figured they were getting confused with crickets.

Vicious, not sure if you can get a good look...but these are what I want. PetSmart sells them as "crickets"... they aren't the ugly black house crickets and they aren't the big 'ol grasshoppers that are in many of our yards....the kind that hop/fly... they resemble the small, light green ones with the long antennas' that are in yards, altho I don't see them very often anymore. I want to buy more and better quality ones than PetSmart offers but can't seem to find them.

Some people use grasshoppers, but I don't Grasshoppers tend to bite, much like superworms. My gliders just started eating bugs for the first time, so they aren't very agressive with them. They tend to let them linger in their hands for a little while, much like joeys do when they're exploring new bugs.
