Hey guys I'm kind of freaking out. One of my females has been constipated for a week or two. I thought that this was due to diet since i had changed their fruit veggie mix and my other girls had seemed constipated as well so I've been adding more fruits to their diet and they have all improved except her. She has continued to poop and the consistency hasn't been too bad. Well tonight I was noticing that she is still straining really bad. Well I looked at her bottom and saw something I was not expecting.. she has a hole in her abdomen it has puss in it and she has what looks like another one forming.
I will be rushing her to the vet first thing in the morning. I am wondering if anyone knows what this is and what I could possibly do for her tonight to ease her pain or make it better. I feel like a horrible mama right now. . Like i should have known sooner.. i hope it's not too late. I am holding her now and she is calm. She is not grooming the sore which is great but I know tjis can turn into SM at any moment.

Hi Mallory,

I am new to this forum but as a veterinary technician, what you may be looking at (and how I am taking your description) is an abscess. First things first, stay calm and remember to breathe. Your little one can and will pick up on your anxiety. Make sure the area is clean and don't rub. Your veterinarian will know more once you bring her in and will be able to examine, clean, and get her on the right track. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

:-)

Have you noticed any fighting lately? Sometimes abscesses can be caused by a bite from another glider. Or possibly hers is from her, trying to fix the constipation that probably felt uncomfortable.

In any case we can only speculate. If you don't already have the Vetericyn spray, definitely pick some up. In my limited experience with abscesses, it seems like once a glider has one it can be more prone to having more down the road, especially if it's bacterial-related and the bacteria isn't completely addressed.

Let us know how the vet goes, hope she's on the mend soon!

Sorry I haven't posted on here, been a busy few days. This was a case of abscess. The vet went in and cleaned it out and said it was actually two massive abscesses. She said they went really deep. I got her on clauvamox antibiotic for 10days and the vet gave me a cleaning solution to use a few times a day and a some soothing cream to use once a day.

Mira is doing good. She is still pretty tired and sore. But she is eating well. She will be in a hospital cage until she is healed so in the mean time she gets a little supervised mama cuddling time with Esma - they sure do miss eachother. Just wanted to fill everyone in so if this happens to someone else they can see this. The vet is thinking it was cause by a cut or bite of some sort, and she is not concerned on any constipation at this time.
