 New Glider

Recently I adopted a male glider from a lady who used to use him for breeding; his mate recently passed away. She decided she wanted to get out of the breeding business. He is 2 years old and I am having some trouble trying to bond with him. I spend a good amount of time interacting with him. He lets me pet him and he wants to explore but I am afraid of letting him out on his own. I am not able to pick him up. What else can I do that would help him bond with me.

P.S. he takes food from my hand just fine. I always have dry food and water available for him in his cage and I cut up fruit and veggies for him daily. He also gets mealworms and a couple of yogurt drops every other day or when he is good and behaves.

Any suggestions are greatly welcomed! Thank You!

Thank You for replying. I did let him out of his cage and he explored my jackets that were hanging up and liked that because of the pockets and hoods he could crawl in. I have been taking him out a lot more now that I know I can get him back by showing him his pouch from his cage.

hello. I apologize for replying so late, I just saw your post (your posts are more likely to get quick replies if they are made in the glider gossip rather than in the journal -most of people don't read the journals-) Basically, try to see from his eyes, everything around him is new, you're a new human to him, it's a scary situation. Add to this that he is alone, no one to cuddle with in the pouch, or to play with at night, which is also a new situation to him, he might be depressed by the loss of his mate. Usually, gliders don't like to be picked, they much prefer use you as a tree and walk on you rather than being picked, so nothing to worry about. what you can do if you are afraid to let him explore your room is to have playtime in the bathroom (providing there's no place to hide there and that he can't fall in water) or in a tent. Basically in the evening you take his pouch with him inside and you go lock yourself in the bathroom (or the tent) with some treats and some toys. You can also use a bonding pouch to carry him on you a few hours during the day while he is sleeping. Ultimately, he will bond, with time. It might be easier however if you have a 2nd glider to pair him with

My male (Little Foot) lets me pet him just about everywhere except his tummy and such but i can rub his face and nose or play with his tail. I let him out of his cage this morning and he explored a little near me. I used yogurt chips to keep him close or on me.
