So, I've had Macey over a month now. Yes, she is a solo glider, but she wasn't at the beginning.
I first started off with Macey's brother, a sweet little male I had named Gizmo. He was my world. My parents saw him, and my mother fell in love with sugar gliders. Seeing how Gizmo was already becoming attached to me, she wanted a pet that would be hers (most animals tend to favor my dad over anyone else in the house, except for our eldest female chihuahua, Imi, who is solely my kid brother's baby). So, I called my breeder, and two days later, we had Macey join the family.
Long, tragic story cut short, Gizmo and Macey escaped their cage, and Gizmo fell in the toilet. =[ Mom, seeing how Macey didn't take well with her, gave her to me, and I was once again, owner of a sugar glider.
Now I know, most people will argue that I should have replaced him, but seeing how I'm saving for a wedding, my own home with my fiance, and nursing school, the chance of that happening anytime soon was, and still is, slim to none.
I monitored Macey carefully, and she showed no signs of over-grooming, self mutilation, etc. In fact, she seemed happier to have a cage to herself.
Now came the hard part: bonding with her.
As a CNA, my residents get most of my time. If I'm not working, I'm usually popping by my nursing home to check on them. If one is out of his/her favorite soap, I buy it for them. I love them. They're like extended members of my family.
I was worried that maybe I wouldn't develop as strong of a bond with her as some people have with their suggies.
So far, I was wrong.
When I go into work on my days off, Macey travels with me, and my residents adore her. When we're home, she prefers me over the rest of the family, and she makes a dive for my undershirt, where she will promptly curl up and sleep during the daytime. At night, when I get home from work, she will "chew me out" in sugarnese until I tell her hello, then it's an offer of mealworm, and she's content to make a dive into my scrub pocket and wait until I'm ready to play.
Sometimes, she throws a temper tantrum. For example, last week, I worked two double shifts, back to back, 2:30p-7a, meaning I would be too tired to play with her when I got home. I had the weekend off though, and when I came home Friday, after I caught up on my sleep, I got her out of her cage for some much needed makeup play time.
Oh boy, did I get an earful!
She crabbed at me, nipped me (not too hard, of course, but enough to get her point across), and did so for the first hour I had her out. After she had "gotten her point across" with one final nip, she perched herself on my shoulder and began to lick and groom my hair and "purr" as she did so.
Right now, she's in my hoodie, grooming my hair as I type this, though there's been a few instances where she's jumped on the keyboard as if to say, "Okay, enough, playtime!"
I'm assuming, and taking all of this, as signs that the bonding process is going well. We'll see in a month if anything changes.
