Finally we have seen the Joey!

Our joey is really here and OOP. I was amazed at how tiny it is. The first thing I saw was a tiny tail. Then a few moments later I saw the tiny hand grab Meeka's furry wing. Last night everyone came out of pouch to eat and left joey in the pouch. So I quickly removed took one picture and put the pouch back in the cage. I have to keep reminding myself to leave the family alone to enjoy their new arrival. We decided to name this one Bindi. Still do not know if we have a boy or girl. I'm also still trying to confirm if Meeka has released a second joey into her pouch.

 My Family is growing!

Wow, it's been awhile since my last log in here. Everyone is doing great and have all settled in really well. I'm still dealing with having a huge cage and not being able to get more gliders to get along enough to move in with Kneo's family(4).
Our newest group is growing. We have a joey due oop anyday now. Last night I saw another small pea sized bump in the other side of Meeka's pouch. This will be our second joey since we got them just about 4 months age. It makes me sad because I can not work on bonding with Meeka that much longer. Everyone in this cage is so sweet other then her. She will need some work when she is done raising her babies. I'm excited to be able to experience having the joey's.
Everynight I check on this group and feed treats so that I can monitor the Joey though the cage bars. I can see the growth that is happening and I have seen it moving several times now. Last night Meeka was making a different noises of hissing. Not sure if that is her singing to the joey or not. This joey will be named Chi. I keep telling Bandit(brother) to have Chi come out to play soon. I tried to photograph her belly but she's not helping that at all. I got one picture and you really can't see anything. Hubby and I are talking about buying another large cage just for Meeka's group(3-5) if her joey's make it. I find the bigger cages easier to keep clean.

More rescues come home with me.

Friday I'm relaxing on the beach with hubby when I get a call from a friend. She wanted to know if I was interest in a few more gliders. I had her forward the email from the lady who was turning them over. I contacted her as soon as we got home that night. I found out she wanted all 5 of her gliders to be rehomed. I told her I could help her with that. We made arrangements to meet on sunday to pick them up. They are two groups. One group of two (one) neutered male and (one) female. The other group is two intact males and one female. This is a breeding pair. They were all really tame other the the older breeding female(Meeka). This couple decided to give them up due to no time to spend with them. When we got there and she showed me the gliders they had no pouches to sleep in. They also had no toys to play with. Other then that they are well fed and very healthy. I have a vet appointment on Oct. 20th to have the boys neutered. Last night the breeding pair were mating so we might get a joey or two.

 Mugwy moves in.

Mugwy comes to live with us. We are now a family of six gliders. My daughter had a single girl glider named Mugwy. They had only had her about three months, when they decided to put her in our home to eventually add her to our colony of gliders. They noticed a difference in behavior when they pet sat my four gliders during our vacation. Our would be crazy monkeys every night. while Mugwy would only come out to eat and spent time being held. Not really playing or enjoying life at all.

When they got her they were told to feed almonds, cashews, fruits and veggies. I helped them learn the right diets and started to provide they with some of my frozen cubes of fruit and veggies and proteins. Then offered to help them find her a cage mate. They then decided to bring her to us this past week. With tears in his eyes my son-in-law left her with us. They know that I can give her what she needs in time and healthy foods as well as a cage mate.

We are planning to try to introduce Bella and Mugwy over the next few months. As well as getting her(Mugwy) bonded to me. I have already start to wear her sleeping pouch a few hours everyday. She does not seem to mind. She will come to the top and check out what I'm doing then go back down to sleep.

Bella update: She seems to be settling in OK at this point. It took longer then I thought it would. But we are working with her timing not mine. At first I could not get near her. She would lounge at me, lots of crabbing and try to bite. Now she will take treats from the palm of my hand. Today we have her in her sleeping pouch and then in a bonding pouch and she is quite so far. Very littel crabbing. No lounging or trying to bite through the pouches. So I hope to start to take her into the bathroom soon for some play time. She is eating great too.

 Our new addition!

We have adopted another sugar glider. Her name was Crabby, we have renamed her Bella. She comes to us from Rebecca in the Ellenington area. Rebecca recued her from a very unclean and undercared for place. She had a fecal smear done and all is well. She has spent about three weeks nursing her to better health.

Bella is very wheel protective and we found out she is pouch protective to. The trip home with her was very stressful for her. There was lots of crabbing. We already had a cage setup and ready to go. So she is now settling in and we are hopeful she will adjust to us OK. She did eat some of her dinner last night too. We will start the bonding process in a few days to let her settle in with us first. We hope to start intro's to our other gliders within a few months.

My other babies are doing great. I feel we are bonding at a fast rate compared to some of of the stories on the forum. All my babies will sit on my and Kneo will fly onto me and off. They are all taking treats from my hands now. Some personities are coming through. Kneo is my clown and is the most playful. Pickles is the cuddly one. Gizmo is still just a bit shy but very playful. Trinity is my challenge, she is very shy and scares easily.

Kneo has been nurtered. Recovery has been easy so far. He is still very playful and does not even notice that he has been fixed. He missed the girls so much we are letting them all together for playtime till he can be back in the cage with the girls.

 Bonding & vacation

Well as some of you know I did go on vacation a week after adopting my four sugar gliders. Not the best plan. I got home this past week end and found that some of my gliders have bonded to my daughter. Thats OK. Now we are back home in my house and they are not very comfortable with me. So I'm back to square one with them. The last two nights I've tried the bathroom play time and no one wanted to come out to play. So now I'm back to holding their pouch and loven on them that way till they are ready to try again. I don't mind because I get up close with them this way. Gizmo is so cute she is my crabby one but she also will get up close(nose to nose) to check me out. Kneo is doing good too. He likes his treats and will come to me for them. Pickles is open to getting her treats from me too. Now Trinity is a different fish. She wants nothing to do with anyone. She is so shy. I'm working on just letting her get used to my hand. She will not take any treats from me yet. She will hide her face so she thinks I can't see her. and she shakes alot when you are near her. No biting or crabbing so that makes me hopeful that I can get through to her. She is so darn cute I just want to kiss on her but I know better. I'm enjoying the time spent just holding the pouch. We have a three person tent that I'm considering putting up to try a tent time.

 My First Sugar gliders

It all started with us meeting a local breeder at a flea market. I fell in love with his four gliders. However did not have the money to spend, $400.00 got you one glider, a very small homemade cage, pellet food and a leash, one bonding pouch.

I was hooked and started the research to learn as much I could before getting any gliders. three weeks later check craigs list everyday for a week. I found a very sad ad that had 4 young gliders for sale. All from the same parents. I called and set a time to go see them. Drove one hour to get there and found a very sad situation. They were being kept in a tiny cage(all four together). The cage had not been cleaned in a very long time. It was caked in pee pees. They and the whole room stank to high heaven both of the sugar gliders and of cigar smoke. YUK! YUK! YUK! None of them had names so sad. They had not been handled for a long time as well.

I decided to buy them at the time because they were very neglected. I brought them home made them a clean sleeping pouch and moved them into a large flight cage. I also started them on fresh fruits and veggies. That night I also started to make blender mixes from ingredients I had at home already. Eggs(cooked), veggies, honey, fruit.

Their nails were over grown so I bought perch covers to help wear their nails down. It's working very well.

It has now been three weeks and they are thriving. I will be taking them to get a vet check and to schedule a nueter for my male Kneo. I noticed a change in their fur coats and some weight gain. The smells are not as bad as well.
Our next goal is to find the materials and make a very large cage for them. I want them to have a castle to enjoy and lots of room for playing.

My babies all have names now. Kneo(Boy), Piclkes(girl), Trinity(girl) and gismo(girl). They are all adjusting well. Trinity is so shy but we are working with her. I like to sit with a book and hold them in their pouch as they wake up at night. Then we go into my bathroom and have playtime. They seem to really enjoy being loose and using me as a climbing tree. I may end up getting a tent too. Would like to try it. I have decked out my bathroom with climbing ropes and a large fake plant that they love to play in. They do let me touch them. Kneo will fly to me if I'm to far away to climb on.

I have set up this tempary home for them that has ropes, wodent wheel, ladders, shevles, corner shelves, toys, sleeping pouches, perches with rough texture to help with nails. Looking into getting some tunnels asap.

I plan to start BML or HPW as soon as I can find ingredients to get it mixed.
