 first time owner

Our sugar gliders, Mickey and Minni, got their first opportunity out of the cage tonight. I would like some advice on how much time to spend in a bonding pouch, FIRST TIME they come out of the cage. I did not go to other sites to read up on this seeing as this is the best sugar glider friendly site I have come across. I was only able to get one of the sugar gliders out, and when I attempted to get the other one to have a little bonding time, both of them went into their little pouch we have in their cage. Whenever possible, we are going to get a Gengi tent to do some real bonding. When my fiance went in his parents' room to show that he had the sugar glider in it, the dog came out to see what was going on. The sugar glider and pouch were well out of reach before anyone gangs up on me, lol. Finally, my fiance settled down sitting and the sugar glider, which I believe was Mickey, and I placed him back in the cage(putting the pouch in before I unzipped it). It surprised me when I first opened the pouch and he stayed peeking out for about a minute. If anyone can give me advice about whether or not to put them in the ball tomorrow night(for my fiance's knowledge). Also for some bonding advice on do(s) and don't(s) for the next couple of days, weeks, months even. Thank you for listening, and I am up to criticism, just not about the dog, I already know about that and cannot control the mind of my fiance(lol.

how long have you had them? it can take weeks or months for a glider to bond to you (depending on how their last owner treated them) i wouldnt put them in a ball. gliders like to jump, glide, climb and just explore. it would be pretty boring to be stuck in that ball. and it could be stressful for them to be on the ground since in the wild they like to be up high away from any danger and can be safe. use the bathroom or another glider proof room so that they can have some out of cage time till you get the tent. http://www.sugarglider.com/glidergossip/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=27834 read my post there about bonding. and i guess you can keep them in the bonding pouch as long as you want. just make sure they are getting a day of sleep and i would only wear it around the house (later on you can decide if you want to take them places but i dont do that to risky) always take the bite because if you pull away your teaching them that if they bite you will go away or stop doing whatever it is your doing. this is a great place for info you should read other threads here about toys and other things. read things on the gliderpedia (which is at the top of the site) and keep asking questions and feel free to come into the chatroom in the evenings/nights. i wont yell at you about the dog since i sometimes have my dog in the room when the gliders are out but havent lately she is having trouble getting up the steps. since i dont know your dog all i can tell you is to be careful and dont let the gliders get near the dog you never know what the dog will do. i dont trust my dog with the gliders and always make sure she is sleeping under the covers. she has slept in my bed for 12 years so i cant kick her out. you sound like a smart person so im sure you wont do anything stupid like let the dog give the glider kisses or let the glider jump on the dog's back or anything like that. good luck with your gliders and welcome to the fourm.
