He's crazy!

 He's crazy!

Hello! My name is Heather. I bought a 9 week old male standard grey sugar glider yesterday. I've been trying to hold him, and he's just so frantic! I feel so bad. He's afraid of me :( When I try to hold him he tries to just run away from me. He's pretty intimidating. But I try my best to but on my brave face. Is it normal? Is he just not comfortable with me yet? I also tried carrying him in a bonding pouch but every move I make he crabs like crazy! Please respond! :) Thank you! :)

we just got ours a week ago and were having the same problem. we left them alone for 2 days. we talked to them thru the cage and gave them treats also thru the cage until they got used to us being around. they are getting better and i think bathroom time really helps. we just let them out in the bathroom where its closed off. they explore but if something startles them they jump back on. its a great feeling. good luck and this site has a lot of people with a lot of advice. :)

Yes its normal, if they crab in pouch a good gentle press with your hand helps soothe them. it all sounds normal.

Hey Heather, yes that all sound perfectly normal, but you should leave the glider alone in the cage for the first couple days so he can get used to the new smells and living area. Putting a shirt that you use to sleep in that hasnt been washed yet also is a good idea, this will surround him with your smell to help the "bonding" proccess of your new glider to you. after the first two days, then you should move onto carrying him in his bodning pouch. Yes they do crab in the pouch, its just a noise that they are scared or nervous. a gently press of your palm over them where they are in the pouch seems to sooth them, though my male had my wife walking around half the day with a hand snuggling him. I have heard recommendations that if you are gonna have him in the pouch for longer than 3 or four hours its a good idea to drop in a apple slice after that time period so they dont get dehydrated. I dont know if this is good practice since there diets can be pretty strict to keep a balance, but perhaps half a slice wouldnt hurt. after that, there are plenty of links and if you just search "Bonding" on the forums you will see some great write ups and good links to tips and tricks, but for the first couple days, let him mellow down and get used to the new home, after that there are other to go more indepth. it can really take anywhere from a week to a couple months for a glider to fully settling into bonding. that dosent mean you wont be holding him in a few days and him crawling all over you, just that even then the glider is still learning and bonding. its all part of an experience. Keep up the Brave face, and dont let it get you down. the best time in the beginning to pick them up is from the shirt they are sleeping in. slowly move the top layer aside till you find them. I acutally use my bonding pouch turned inside out for the first few days of picking up my male as he was a bit of a bitter. others feel it adds undue stress, either way it can be hard to get a proper hold and pouching them helps with the confidence. Just remember what ever you do, try to never pull away. he may "pop" or "jump" a few inches in your direction when you go to pick him up, its just a big tough guy act. My other male has bopped my hand with his nose all time but never bite me. he just likes to push me around, but jerking your hand back will make them do it more as they get the response from you they want, but sounds like he is just a tad nervous and will come around in next few days.
