Oct 28, 2011 Hungry boys yesterday! Posted by: PaaniWow, they were big eaters yesterday! They had a double portion of blended food AND healthy helpings of yam, papaya and apple. Interestingly, they are definitely eating some of the dry food during the day; oh well, I enjoy the occasional snack of potato chips or worse. I stopped off at Hobby Lobby on my way home, hoping to spruce the cage up a bit and give them something more to do than run in the wheel and sleep in the pouch. Found some nifty plastic baskets that I loaded up with 1-inch pom poms and fruit-shaped rubber (really silicone) bands (on clearance for 44 cents per dozen) then set hanging from the roof of the cage. I saw Laki investigating the basket last night when I got up momentarily. Lele was too busy chomping on apple to care -- amazing because he usually runs for the pouch the moment he sees me. So far, Lele still hasn't got any mealworms here because he crabs and hides when he sees me -- but hey, Laki's more than happy to be the center of attention at worm time. This morning there were a couple pompoms on the floor of the cage and one lonely pineapple band (how appropriate!) sitting out. Looks like the other 11 bands probably went into the pouch with them but I didn't want to peek because just turning the light on got a short crab from Lele.
Oct 27, 2011 Progress comes slowly Posted by: RememoSnick, the less aggressive one now climbs all over me during tent time. Snack will walk on me if I bribe her with a piece if chicken or turkey. I think I heard one of them make the clicking noise that Sugar Gliders make when they're very happy. I guessed that it would take about six months for them to adapt to their new home and feel comfortable enough to sit in my hands. I think we're right on schedule. Oct 25, 2011 Light bonding Posted by: PaaniTook Laki and Lele out of the cage for a little bit yesterday. Wow, did they ever carry on! They did NOT want to leave the cage pouch to go inside the bonding pouch even though I'd put some lovely fresh blueberries in the bonding pouch for them. They didn't want to exit the cage pouch at all so I ended up inverting it so it opened into the bonding pouch and only the bonding pouch but they clung to the top (bottom?) of the cage pouch and didn't want go down. I had to carefully coax them by taking up any slack in the end of the cage pouch and carefully moving them down. Once they were in the bonding pouch they quieted down and purred a bit but wow what a fuss going down! They spent a couple hours with me in the pouch before I returned them to the cage (one, I think Laki, moved up to the top of the bonding pouch and was "scratching" at the top so I figured they wanted to get out and pee). Laki sped right out and did his business but Lele couldn't decide whether he wanted out or was scared to leave the pouch more. Once he decided, he was out of the pouch, did his business and then into the cage pouch like lightning. I guess the silver lining (for them) was that they got fresh Hawaiian papaya and Asian pear from Korea with dinner. They seemed a little indecisive with the Korean pear, preferring to finish off the remnants of an apple slice before trying it but they were all over the papaya! too bad they had to leave Hawaii as my mother has a papaya tree just outside the kitchen. Oct 23, 2011 They like Chinese broccoli Posted by: PaaniWow ... these are certainly Hawaiian gliders! Last week I tried giving them some steamed Chinese broccoli and they devoured it. My other two typically turned up their noses at it (What's with the leafy green stuff! He KNOWS we don't like any of that junk!). I gave them some of the new batch of blend I made for Anson and Judah and they seemed to like it but not as much as they like their suggie soup so I picked up some pulped mango and Hawaiian papaya from a nearby Oriental grocery. Only thing I don't have is the Trader Joe's Vanilla Soy but looking at the diet calculator here, it seems like 2 TBSPs of Wombaroo is fairly close to 1 tsp of Trader Joe's so I may try making some of that. I'm sure my guys would like a change of pace from time to time too. I know my blend and the LGRS suggie soup have similar Ca:P ratios but need to check the other nutrients. Just had tent time with Anson and Judah, need to clean it out and sanitize it before using it with Laki and Lele; I can't wait until quarantine is over! Oct 22, 2011 Getting back into the swing of things Posted by: Nip Hi Everyone! I am fairly new to SugarGlider.com. I just wanted to introduce myself and hopefully learn a few things. I have only owned a total of 3 gliders and unfortunately two of them have gone to Glider heaven. =( Jax, and Tuck were my boys, and will be forever loved and missed. Nip is my female and still remains with me. I am here because I love sugargliders and am hoping to learn how to reconnect with Nip. She is about 3-4 years old now, and over time due to work I have lost connection with her. She's had a rough time, as Tuck used to attack her constantly to the point I had to separate them. She recovered from that and seems to be doing good. However I want to make sure she is happy now that I have the time to do so again, make no mistake I have always taken good care of her, but some of the quality time was lost. If anyone has any suggestions I am ready and willing to listen. =) Nice to meet everyone and we hope to make some good friends. Oct 18, 2011 Hawaiian Rescues Posted by: PaaniFirst of all, many thanks to everyone who helped rescue these guys from certain death in Hawai`i. Laki and Lele made it to their Colorado forever home Sunday afternoon. The whole drive from Van Alstyne, I only heard them crab twice: the first time was when I accidentally jostled the popup kennel they were in (loud and long crabbing) and the second time was when I opened the pouch to see how they were doing (short crab almost as if they were saying, "close it, I'm cold!"). The rest of the time they were chirping and clicking happily. They enjoyed the Custom Cruiser on the ride back to Colorado. I can't get it in the temporary cage but they're having fun on the Wodent Wheel every night. They can't seem to decide whether they like the UFO or the cage pouch more, they seem to swap places constantly. The boys are in quarantine near the master bedroom right now. They weren't too happy about being taken out of the cage yesterday night although I think Laki forgave me when he realized it was to get a few mealworms. Lele passed on the mealworms so he could burrow further in the pouch. I'll give them a little more time to get adjusted before they get tent time. Not sure if Ed gave them blueberries during their stay at LGRS but Laki acted like it was a new wonderful treat when he discovered them in the food bowl. They are happily cleaning their bowls of the suggie soup; I just got some Wombaroo in so we'll try them with Anson and Judah's blend after they finish the soup Ed gave me before I left. I can't wait to get introductions going -- it's going to be a long month! Oct 18, 2011 I need a glider again:/ Posted by: mookybearI am a previous suggie owner. Her name was mooky. She was my life. She was pulled from my life unfourtunatly. I have had roughly 5 months to get used to life without owning a sugar bear...it sucks. I think about her everyday. I have now came to realize that Im ready for a new companion. The problem is I cant find one!!! I live in lafayette Indiana. If you have any help, PLEASE COMMENT. Thank You! Oct 9, 2011 My Babies Posted by: BatmansdadJust wanted to share pics of the babies, Batman and Catwoman. My Baby Girl is in quarantine right now so we have them on opposite sides of our home. Batman is laid back and bit on the pouch protective side while Catwoman is a little spite fire! She's up early and goes to bed late, always running around her cage. She's new to us so she'll crab if we even think of coming near her. Her first day of bonding she crabbed at me like there was no tomorrow! Bats just wants to chill, He let us pet him last night which was a massive break through for us! more to come later Oct 9, 2011 Last Night Was a Five Star Day! Posted by: RChurchBatman let us pet him inside his pouch! OMG, he is SO SOFT! And I may be imagining things, but I believe his bald spot is starting to grow back some. He looks at me & it seems he's finally understanding that we love him, & that all this is for him. I feel so bad for him. We discovered last night that he cannot close his bad eye. The vet said that it was scarred from an old ulcer that was never addressed by his previous owners & quite possibly, his vision is impaired. As he cannot close that lid, I would have to say, yes, he is probably blind on that side and there's really nothing the vet can do at this point about it, except, perhaps remove it. :( The good news is, he's with us now. So all future ailments or weirdness at all, he is getting rushed to the vet ASAP. Catwoman, on the other hand, is still crabbing us as if crabbing is about to be made into an Olympic Sport & she's determined to win the gold medal. She is sweetest first thing in the morning where she'll shyly, tenderly, and/or cautiously take food from your fingertips. But at any other point of the day, she darts back & forth in her cage trying to get far away from you as possible. (We don't push the issue of holding her. We were just changing out her food plate or putting up her monkeys again.) She sure eats a lot but I can't really compare what she eats to what Batman eats because I think we've already established the fact that Batman has shown signs of depression (which is slowly lifting, thank God). Luckily, I am a light sleeper, so when she barks, I go & check in on her & when her plate is mostly empty, I go & give her more food. Yes, I've become a glorified waiter. :) Still, I love my kids & I'd do anything for them. Been working double shifts trying to pay for all the recent expenses put on the Almighty Credit Card. And while I'm exhausted, I still spend a little time with them every night because I want them to know how much I care. Tired but happy seems to be the norm for me now. Welcome to parenthood, eh? Oct 5, 2011 MOOSE AND ROSE Posted by: mrbrebre2211Hi, I'm new to this site, wait do people even read my journal?? Oh well! Ha ha, ha ha. I absolutely love my moose and rose!! Moose has 'lil buck teeth! ooooh i love it! And rose has her own unique way of saying hello, and when she wants to come out and play!!! It took me sometime to introduce them to each other!! :) But it finally worked. They've been in the same cage getting along for exactly 1 week now. :) And, guess what??! I'm already excited for they're little baby(ies)!! :) Well I also love to play with them. I would say Moose is WAY WAY more outgoing and less-shy than Rose, definitely. And when Rose does come out, she usually stays in the same place, runs around on her wheel that i take out for her, or hurries and hops back in the pouch. It's kind of disapointing, but I"ll get her to come out sooner or later, just you see!! Ha ha ha, ha ha ha. Well i am pretty tired! Bye!! -MR(MOOSE,ROSE)BREBRE2211 Oct 5, 2011 1st Night with the Baby Girl Posted by: RChurchOkay, okay, so she's not actually a baby at a year old but you know she'll always be mama's baby no matter what. Of course, right now, she doesn't consider me to be her mama but she'll know sooner or later that I care about her. She woke me up with her barking last night. Several times, actually, so I ended up sleeping on the sofa so I could cater to her every whim. Same as for Batman, though he didn't bark when we first got him & oddly enough, didn't bark last night in response. I sometimes wonder if he even knows she's here. She ate like a pig last night & still wanted more. Wow. But that's why I wanted to be close to her, so I could tell what's going on. And she even took some dried mango from my hands. That only happened once, though. I couldn't get her to take the dried papaya from me this morning at 7:45am but I guess she wasn't as hungry then. And forget about meal worms. She ate them when I served them with her dinner as a "welcome to your new home" treat but she's even more cautious of me that Batman. Which is an odd statement seeing how Batman hardly ever leaves his pouch but is quick to grab food from my fingers and gobble it up. But Catwoman...? Well, she's not even been with us for a full 24 hours yet, so I can't complain. She's every inch a spit fire I anticipated getting. She LOVES to be out & about in her cage. And I'm happy to hear she's not trying to get OUT of her cage, either. For that fear, I've had to put her in the guest bathroom for her own safety. It's the most glider-proofed room right now. We've got 80% of the kitchen/laundry/water heater corner taken care of but those are odds I don't like. And it's too open. If she gets out, she can be literally anywhere: behind the television, sofa, bookcases...You get the idea. So, for now, bathroom it is. We're not using it as a bathroom anymore, just so you know. After watching an episode of Mythbusters on just how filthy a bathroom can be if in use, we're just not willing to do that to our baby. I can't wait for the 30 day Quarantine to be over with, the all-clear given & I can start to move her into the bedroom with us. This is killing me & I feel like I'm telling her she's second best but it's not true. It's just for their own safety that I do this. I don't want to risk them getting sick from each other, nor do I want Batman to get angry with her for invading his space. :/ All in due time...all in due time....I gotta remember to be patient. Oct 4, 2011 Waiting for the New Cage to Come In Posted by: RChurchC'mon FedEx! "The world on time", my butt! New cage was supposed to be delivered today & I called & found out it will be delivered no later than 7pm tonight. :/ But I want it NOW! Brought Catwoman home from the vet & am told she is in good health. Even did a urinary exam as well as the usual well exam & fecal smear/float test. She tested negative! Yay! So, all we have to do now, is wait out the 30 day quarantine & retest. Vet said to let her nails be trimmed when we come back in 30 days as she's been through a lot & we don't want to overwhelm her. As much as Batman is difficult to get OUT of his pouch, she is about as difficult to get back IN her pouch! LOL! We were 3 fools trying to scoop her up for her exams & she wouldn't have any of that. She climbed up on all of our legs & backs & we even got to see a glider GLIDE for the 1st time! This was exciting! I hope some of her youthful exuberance rubs off on Batman. And I hope he calms her DOWN. So far, I have not heard a peep from him despite how she has crabbed at me from her bonding pouch when my phone went off. We believe he is dead asleep. Then again, we had a very active night last night, so I can't say I blame him. If we didn't have plans to pick up Catwoman, I might be napping, too! She didn't crab at me nearly as much as I thought she would, nor did she bite anyone. She did nip at the stethoscope some, but that was it. She's really pretty though a whole lot smaller than I imagined. She's about 3/4 of Batman's size. We'll see what a month's diet on HPW Complete will do.
